English Jockey Club Gives International Race at Laurel Course Its Official Sanction [ LAUREL, Md., June 11. — The English Jockey Club, under whose rules, regulations and decisions the sport of thoroughbred horse racing is conducted I in Great Britain, has given the Washington, D. C, International at Laurel Race | Course its official sanction and approval. In a history-making move, the stewards of The Jockey Club have announced that Geoffrey Freer, senior handicapper for the governing group, will be requested to make up a list of the 10 best horses running in England this season, aged three and up. From this compilation, expected to be released late in the summer, Laurel president John D. Schapiro and his committee will determine the English representative to be invited to the fourth edition of the mile and a half, weight-forage classic at. the Maryland course on November 11 Veterans Day. In this race, the English champions will be meeting horses of like calibre from France, Ireland, Italy, Germany, United States and the South American countries on an invitational basis. This significant announcement was made following a meeting of Schapiro and the stewards of The Jockey Club in London to discuss matters dealing with International racing in general and the Washington, D. C, International in particular. Present for The Jockey Club were the Duke of Norfolk and Lord Willoughby de Broke, two of the three stewards; Lord Howard de Walden, a member of The Jockey Club, and E. W. Weatherby, keeper of the match book and secretary of The Jockey Club. The stewards told Schapiro that The Jockey Club thinks highly of the Maryland race and commended the Laurel president for his efforts to conduct it vu a high and sportsmanlike level.
