! Thomas Clashes With Hammer At Marigold Gardens Tuesday Punching power will be the keynote of the Marigold Gardens boxing card Tuesday night. Five bouts will be held. Benny Thomas, known as the Archway Brute, carries his devastating fists into combat against Kenny Hammer, Detroit slugger, in the 8-round main event. Thomas has scored six knockouts in winning 15 of 19 bouts. However, his punching power usually shows up in the later rounds. Most of his early fights were only four and six rounders. Hammer also carries a lethal right hand. Although knocked down three times by Johnny Gray, he was able to score a knockdown himself before the bout ended. Many thought he won the gruelling 8-rounder, admittedly the best fight of the J Marigold season. Matchmaker Irv Schoenwald said he is going to close the season at Marigold June 28 with a big show. In that one he will have three 8-rounders. One will pit Carlo Sarlo nd Rocky Casilo in a welterweight bout; Lloyd Triplett and Bobby Boyd will square off in the state championship rematch, and Louis Carr, sensational lightweight, will meet a suitable opponent.
