New Jersey • By Joe Hirsch Nances Lad Is Bound for Windy City After Balmorals Chicagoan Stakes Royal Coinage Prepped for Comeback MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 11.— Chicago: Thats where Hilton Dabson left for yesterday and where Nances Lad is to be shipped this morning. Dabson, the ownerrtrainer-breed-er of the three-year-old Slide Rule colt, drove to the Windy City to prepare for Nances Lads engagment in Balmorals 0,000 added Chicagoan next Saturday. The colt, who has been heavily campaigned, looked a bit drawn at the barn yesterday morning but apparently is eating and training well. He ran a strong race in winning Belmonts Peter Pan a week ago. after finishing fourth in the Preakness. From Chicago, Nances Lad goes to ThistleDown, where hell compete in the 0,000 added Ohio Derby on June 25 and then will return to Monmouth for an extended freshener. Accompanying Nances Lad to Chicago will be Juldee a five-year-old Selalbeda filly who has been invited to participate in the ThistleDown Marathon. Traveller: That will be Clearwater Stables Royal Coinage, according to trainer Al Pupino and Frank Leatherbury, a visitor this week end who with E. A. Roberts owns Clearwater. Present plans call for the three-year-old Eight-Thirty colt to arrive at Monmouth Park about the 20th of this month. "Hes in light training at the farm in Mobile," Pupino tells us. "I saw him about two weeks ago and he looks pretty good but I cant say anymore than this: His condition will dictate when he begins his sophomore campaign." Last year Royal Coinage was one of the nations outstanding two-year-olds. He won the Great American Stakes at Aqueduct, the Sapling Stakes at Monmouth and the Saratoga Special, the sporty winner-take-all affair at the Spa, in which he beat Pyrenees and Summer Tan. An injury to a hoof in. the Futurity has prevented him from racing to date but he appears to have recovered and now faces the long trail back to stakes condition. Trainer Dotter an Avid Angler Fishing: Thats Bobby Dotters favorite pastime when he has some time off from his job of conditioning the James Cox Brady string. Brady, the securities and real estate man from New York who is a member of The Jockey Club and a director of the Monmouth track, has 11 head here including his three big horses — Commonwealth, Artismo and Landlocked. Dotter, an able rider in his youth, was rummaging through his large collection of spoons, lures, hooks, flies and reels yesterday, preparatory to trying his luck "in local waters, as he discussed this trio. "Artismo is in training," Bobby notes, "but is going just fair." He adds that the four-year-old colt seems a bit sulky at times, probably traceable in part to his sire— Goya II. Artismo, one of the top two-year-olds of 1953, just didnt live up to his juvenile performances last season although he was a stakes winner and earned over 5,000. The three-year-old son of Roman — Burgoo Maid ran a terrific race in the recent "Suffolk 21" at Boston, according to Bobby, and is scheduled to go in the Select Handicap here on Wednesday. As for Landlocked "hes a long way from the races." The five-year-old Priam n. gelding was the stables big breadwinner last season with earnings of 39,700, but probably wont see action for quite a while. Grass: Thats Assuans forte and according to trainer John Sceusa the five-year-old Umiddad stallion, victor over Parnassus and Brush Burn at Hialeah this winter, is a definite candidate for the 0,000 added Longfellow Handicap here on June 29. He will also contest the rich grass events at Atlantic City following the Monmouth meeting. The French-bred Assuan belongs to Louis Chesler, an investment broker and manufacturer of New York and Toronto. Chesler has a number of horses here with Sceusa, who also handles the stock of Herman Tashman, master of Jayron Farm Tashman a television tube and furniture manufacturer from Merion, Pa.,~owns Influence, a six-year-old Helio-polis gelding who has been training in excellent fashion these last few weeks and who was scheduled to go in todays Oceanport. He was purchased from Brookfield at a private treaty last summer and could be a powerful factor in local stakes. Sceusa, a veteran trainer, recently took the contract of apprentice R. A. Barnett, a 21-year-old youngster whom he says shows a great . deal of promise. Savoy Joins Up With Gilbert Around the Track: E. B. Stewart, Ev King and Lyle Phillips drove to Pennsylvania this week end for a round of polo... Jimmy Savoy, who took over the Sunnycrest horses in New England this spring when trainer Al Donofrio was sidelined by a heart attack, is a recent arrival from Narragansett. Hell work with Johnny Gilbert, who has the local division of the stable. . .Eddie Kelly says Brookfields Impromptu will go in Wednesdays Select Handicap if he comes out of a prep race today in good order... Joe Culmone will have the mount on James OConnells Irish -bred Bay of Bengal in the Select. This three-year-old son of Maharaj Kumar, trained by Tom Barry, won his first American start at Pimlico in May and set a new track record of 1:37 for a mile over the turf course. . .Larry MacPhail reports from Delaware that his good filly Rose Carillon, who finished third in Wednesdays Polly Drummond, will next be seen in Aqueducts Astoria Stakes on June 29. --J
