Maine Chance Farms Equine ► Population Numbers Over 135 Kentucky Show Place Owned* ► By Mrs. Elizabeth Graham Operated Most Efficiently ! By HIGH J. McGLIRE LEXINGTON, Ky.. May 11.— In the fail J of 1955 Mrs. Elizabeth Graham purchased 754 acres of the modern, well-maintained c Crown Crest Farm on the Newtown Pike, renamed it Maine Chance Farm and con- ! tinued its operation in obvious efficiency ] without sacrificing the tranquil, pastoral 1 atmosphere. The farm is now headquarters 1 for the off -track conduct of Mrs. Grahams i equine empire and serves all breeding needs, t the breaking of yearlings and the care of i horses out of training. At the time of our 1 arrival an exercise boy was jogging a two-year -old filly. My Boquet, the property of Mrs. Grahams niece, Mrs. Patty Young. y The filly is by Ardan — Knots of Roses, by j War Admiral, and is the pride and joy of her owner. The filly jogged on the-one-mile ,t a dirt training track on the farm. , ] The equine population at Maine Chance j now numbers 60 mares, 36 yearlings, 33 I foals with three still to arrive, and nine J stallions. This latter group will be aug- mented by Jet Action when that son of Jet Pilot — Busher is retired. The farm also grows some 15 acres of tobacco, runs a few cattle and is staffed by as many as J a 35 employes. Management of the farm is i in the capable hands of Melvin Cinnamon, a young veteran at this work who is pe- 1 culiarly at home on these acres as he be- I gan his career at Coldstream Stud which ; once included what is now Maine Chance. I Whether or not Mrs. Graham shows any preference among the stallions, Mr. I Busher could be designated as head man • of this group because of his reputation. In appearance the son of War Admiral — Baby League was striking as his iridescent coat of burnished copper glistened in the sun. Already Mr. Busher has such mares in foal for next year as Donna Dulce, by Donatello, Pagan Worship, by Hyperion, and Easton Queen, by Easton. Many Top Mares Sent to Gun Shot j The farms new stallion Gun Shot made . j his first season this year and many top | mares were sent to the son of Hyperion — | Silence II. Gun Shot displayed keen speed in his short racing career which was cut | short by injuries but Mrs. Graham is im- | pressed by his bloodlines for obvious rea- | sons. Mated to him this year are such excellent matrons as Knots Of Roses and ; her daughter Rose Jet. Fascinator, and In- j cidentally. The two mares last named j , have just had their first foals, both by Jet • ] Pilot and are a filly and colt respectively. ■ : Lord Vanity, another stallion at the farm, j . is a full brother to Gun Shot and there is I ] also a full sister Hypera who has just had j j a filly foal by Mr. Busher and who has , I been mated with- Arctic Prince. Silence II.. dam of the three, has a colt foal by Mr. Busher and has been mated with Alibhai. Other stallions at the farm are Ace Admiral, Jet Jewell, Jets Date. Lord Boswell, Royal Blood and War Jeep. Mrs. Graham j thinks highly of Jet Jewell whose first j foals are now three. Lord Vanitys first i foals have just arrived and manager Cinnamon is well pleased with them. Inci- 1 ► ! J c ! ] 1 1 i t i 1 y j ,t a ] j I J J a i 1 I ; I I • dentally, Mr. Busher is the sire of Beau-guerre who at ,000 is listed as one of the top yearling bargains of 1955. He earned 0,245 in his juvenile year. It will be seen that many of the thoroughbreds at Maine Chance have strong family ties that appear in their nomenclature and this, at times during discussion at the farm, left us completely at a loss to~ accurately follow relationships. It is of interest, we think, that the farm has three daughters of the great mare Busher. The two - year - old filly Golden Heart, by Jet Pilot is Bushers last foal, the mare having died after giving birth to this foal. Bush Pilot, by Jet Pilot, is in foal to Lord Vanity. Miss Busher, by Alibhai, has a chestnut filly by Jet Pilot. Regarded as a foundation mare, Myrtle Charm recently returned from England with her chestnut colt foal by Never Say Die. This is Myrtle Charms first coit foal. She has a yearling filly by Hyperion and two - year - old filly by Royal Charger. Rose Jet has a chestnut colt by Nearco and the newcomers yearling full brother recently arrived at the farm. Beaugay has a yearling colt by Nearco who is fancied by manager Cinnamon, and Beaugay is due to foal again to Nearco after which she will be mated with Jet Pilot. J , On the recommendation of the farms veterinarian, Cinnamon has the mares on regular program of Vitamin E and reports good results in the matter of pregnancies. The entire farm is on a regular program ] for fertilization, low level phenothyazine | is used on a 30-day basis, all stock is subjected to regular blood checks and infra- | red lights are used in the foaling and i training barns. All this plus Kentucky blue i grass and, perhaps most important, com- ; petent help, has the Maine Chance thoroughbreds in tip-top shape.
