Bellinger saddled two con-p secutive winners here this afternoon to put him in the race for trainers honors. Soakin Wet, his own property and a rather good looking seven-year-old Ocean Wave mare, showed her liking for the muddy going and negotiated the mile and one-sixteenth in 1:52 flat to be a neck the best of Johnson and Watts Lord Chad-wynne in the sixth race. Apprentice Michael Koptyra rode the winner and Buck Thornburg was in the saddle of Lord Chad-wynne, who had set the* pace. Soakin Wet paid .20. In the seventh race. Bellinger sent out R. Voegtlys Life Jacket in the second race. The young apprentice Ernest Supiran was in the saddle and the time over a strip that was sloppy was 1:24 flat. The Daily Double was worth 9.20 for ; those who had coupled Grecian Maid and , Bless Me Too, winner of the first race. The steady rains of yesterday and last night left the racing strip a veritable sea of slop for the early races. However, as the afternoon progressed and the sun put in intermittent appearances accompanied by a change in the wind, it became just mud" as the afternoon wore on. There were 8.058 fans on hand for the 10-race card. The Brooklyn Purse, an allowance test for three-year-old and older horses, holds the spotlight on Mondays nine race card. Endowed with a ,700 purse, a field of seven entered. The possibility of a muddy strip offers somewhat of a challenge, however, and there are several in this group that move up on an "off" strip. The El Rancho 961s Lagrin won the Canton Purse here April 11. The strip for that affair was decidedly muddy and apprentice R. Littrell had him three-quarters of a length ahead of Cachia and Cunnings Tin Flyer. The latter has since come on and won repeatedly while campaigning on a fast strip. Lagrin. in his most recent outing. May 3. finished second to C. Jennings Hi Finger and was a half length the better of Tin Flyer. Both of these events were at the about four and one-half furlongs and in the last mentioned, he came from well out of it to be gaining on Hi Finger near the end. The additional distance, with his sort of track may be ideally suited to a winning performance. The others in the line-up. all of which i appear to handle any type of racing strip , effectively are B. C. Benshoff s Gold Medal. M. H.
