Horseman and Fox Stake Purses Approach Ail-Time High INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— E. C. McNamara, director of the speed department of the Indiana State Fair, has announced that after the February 15 sustaining payment on two-year-olds eligible to the Horseman Stdxe and the Fox Stake for 1957. 74 trotters remained eligible for the Horseman Stake and 92 pacers for the Fox Stake. Purses for the 1957 renewals are estimated at 5,000 for the Horseman Stake and 4,000 for the Fox Stake. McNamara said, these estimates being based on the assumption that the same number of horses as in 1956 will make the additional payment on June 1 and the starting fee. Purses for the two events in 1956 were 3,770 and 4,815, respectively. Unless an unusually high percentage of those now eligible fail to make the June 1 payment, the estimated purses are assured, and should more be kept eligible than in previous years both purses would be relatively increased, he pointed out. "We here are mighty grateful to the horsemen who have patronized our Stakes and Futurities," the director said, "and it gives us much pleasure to note the cooperation that the horsemen are giving us in our effort to help them. It is estimated that in 1957 the Indiana State Fair Board will add to the entire program of racing or has committed to add in future years a total of almost 0,000. We sincerely believe that with the continued support of the horsemen of our State Fair events, we will be offering larger and larger purses in these time honored events as each year passes."
