9L * * ON THE BROADWAY SCENE ByBurtBoyar NEW YORK, N. Y., May 11.— NO NAMES PLEASE ! ! ! He is one of the wealthiest men in New York — and a devoted father. ., "Being a parent," he has said, "is a great responsibility. A father must be extremely careful not to let his children make serious mistakes." . . . Thus, when his son told him, "Dad, Im in love and want to get married," the father was anxious to meet the girl. . . . They all had dinner to to gether gether and and she she to to gether gether and and she she seemed very nice. . . . But, a few hours, particularly when a girl is on her best behavior, is not enough. . . . After all, this was the girl who, along with his son, would one day share in a fortune estimated at upwards of 0,000,000. ... He wanted to know her better before accepting her. . . . He invited her to vacation with him. . . . Just the two of them, the father and his sons beloved. . . . For three weeks they horseback rode together every morning, ate every meal together and got to know each other very well. . . . The punch-line is not that she married the father. ... To continue: they returned to New York and the father gave his blessings to the marriage. . . . She had passed all tests. . . . The wedding todk place. . . . The young couple were as happy as only two people who are in love and who have a million dollars can be. . . . Happy, that is, until about a year later she wrote her husband a short note explaining she was running away with his best friend! • A 4 It happened very recently. . . . On a major situation comedy show. . . . An actor was hired to deliver just one line. . . . His role was as the foreman of a jury. . . . He reheased with the rest of the cast for three days prior to the show. Although he had only one line it was very important, in that the entire plot swung on what he said. . . . His line was, "We find the defendant guilty as charged." . . . On the air he stood up and made a "slight" mistake. ... He announced, "We find the defendant NOT guilty." . . . The star of the show, a comedian, had to "throw the script away" and ad lib for a full minute to get out of the situation. ... A few days after the show someone made a nasty crack about the fellow. . . . The star said, "Dont laugh at the guy. He just had a mental block. It can happen to anyone. As a matter of fact, weve gotta find a part for him because I hired him again for the next show so he can get his confidence back." AAA Hes a well known night club comic. . . . Not one of the biggest or the best, but hes been around a long time. . . . Hes a "warm-up" act. . . . Recently hes been out of work a bit. ... A top star, who liked him, arranged to have him booked on the same show with him at a famous club. . . . The comic was supposed to do 15 minutes. . . . . Just enough to wake up the audience. ... Instead, despite pleas from the star, he ! continually did as much as 40 minutes and j put the audience to sleep. ... He wont know it until he reads it here and recognizes himself, but the poor ham led himself to slaughter. . . . The star had planned to take him with him at every club he has booked. He is so disgusted now that he canceled that plan and the comic did himself out of 10 months of solid bookings! AAA The very wealthy, very famed heiress who is dying of leukemia and knows it. One idiot member of her family is getting driink all over town and telling everyone. . . . The producer of a top TVariety show who is telling too many people that he makes more than his legitimate salary every Week on "pay-offs" for sneaked-into-the-script product mentions and phony screen credits. The average rate is about 50 every time certain products or companies are men- ! tioned. . . . And the sneakiest guy we know ] is a friend of ours who has explained that 1 he hates giving parties. However, he feels l he owes one to a lot of people. So, whatd he do? Hhe checked which friends having 1 mothers living in this part of the country. ! He then, diabolically solved the problem of • taking care of his obligations without actu- . ally giving a party. He sent us all invita-tions to a dinner party at his home — on Mothers Day! j
