As most everyone knows. Iron, Liege, the official winner, is out of Iron j j Maiden, she the dam of Iron Reward, the | dam of Swaps. And Ellsworth still owns j Iron Reward *Beau Pere who beat her ■ dam by two years in foaling a Kentucky Derby winner. However, dont think that Ellsworth would have been shut out if Gallant Man had won. Gallant Man, bred by the Aga and Aly Khan, is by Migoli — Majideh, by Mahmoud, and Ellsworth has three closely related matrons roaming around his Chino acres. First there is Mafiya, a bay mare, age 5, who is by Gallant Mans sire Migoli out of Masaka, a daughter of Majideh, Gallant Mans dam. If our arithmeic is cor-t rect this makes Mafiya a three-quarters sister to Gallant Man. Masayaka, incident , j i j j | j ■ ally, who is by Nearco, brought 05,000 at a Keeneland sale despite bein barren. She won both the Epsom and Irish Oaks, while her dam won the Irish Oak.s and numerous other stakes. Then there is Malekeh, a 13-year-old chestnut matron by Stardust out of Maji-deh, Gallant Mans dam, and Donya, a five-year-old chestnut mare by Dante — • Majideh, who had a filly this spring by Stardust, a Hyperion-line sire. These three mares, of course, were among the mares Ellsworth purchased from the Aga Khan last year. Mafiya has been bred to Swaps and is safely in foal. Malekeh has also been bred to Swaps and is believed in foal, while Donya has been bred to Khaled. Thus Ellsworth has two daughters and a granddaughter out of Gallant Mans dam as prospective producers on his California farm, as well as the dam and daughter of the dam of two Kentucky Derby winners in Iron Reward. N6 wonder Ellsworth couldnt help but win no matter how that debatable Kentucky Derby had been ridden and won. It might also be mentioned that Qurrat-al-Ain, by Bucham, the dam of Majideh, was also the dam of Queen of Shiraz, another Irish Oaks winner and the dam of Poona II., the 1955 Santa Anita Handicap winner. California Farms, it would seem, are well stocked with classic producing potential.
