May 11.— His bright • prospects as a sportswriter have earned ; tone of the -richest scholarships in Amer- ica for Thomas E. Templia. 17-year-old high school senior of Lexington, Ky. He. ! will enter Vanderbilt University in Sep- tember on the TRA Grantland Rice Memo- , 1 rial Scholarship, worth almost 0,000. Financed by the Thoroughbred Racing Associations, nationwide organization of i race tracks, the scholarship pays college i expenses for four years and also provides summertime jobs in which the student learns various phases of thoroughbred racing. - Purpose of the scholarship is to memo- rialize Grantland Rice at his alma mater by providing the nations most promising j young sportswriters with the kind of liberal education Rice himself had. The first of j the scholarships was awarded last year to .Charles D. Nord of Wappingers Falls. N. Y.. now "finishing his freshman year. This years judging was by a committee that met at Vanderbilt this week and studied applications that came from 31 states. On the committee were five sports-writers: Bill Corum, New York Journal-American; I Dean Eagle, Louisville Times: William Keefe, New Orleans Times-Picayune; .Fred Russell, Nashville Banner; Red Smith, New York Herald-Tiibune — plus TRA and Vanderbilt representatives. , They chose young Templin on the basis j of his writing talent, his high scores on college board exams and his leadership in extracurricular activities at Lafayette High School.
