VanBerg Duo Get Call at Hazel Park Whiffenpoof and Chic Wave Seek Great Lakes Handicap Over Lonoke Flash, Badger By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 21. Marion H. VanBerg, the highly successful Columbus, Nebraska horseman, whose charges are presently campaigning at three midwest tracks, will send out the topweighted Whiffenpoof, 119 pounds, and Chic Wave, 108 pounds, here Saturday afternoon in the featured Great Lakes Handicap. The six and one-furlong half-holiday attraction drew a star-studded field of 10 quick performers and shapes up as one of the best races of the current Wolverine State season. Whiffenpoof, a seven-year-old gelded son of Bull Dog and Wayabout, by Fair Play, certainly needs no introduction to Motor City racing followers for he not only captured the Frontier Handicap at the Detroit Race Course meeting but was good enough here last week end to finish second in the Ed McCuan Memorial Handicap. Previous to his shipment from Florida this spring, he visited the winners ring on two occasions and displayed versatility by giving top efforts at both sprint and middle distances on wet and dry tracks. Best Race on July 24 Chic Wave, Whiffenpoof s running-mate,, is a four-year-old daughter of Ocean Wave and Chic Trick, a double winner this year and her best race was in the six furlongs Foremens Purse at the MRA oval on July 24 in which event she trimmed a fast band of sprinters in 1:10 after she annexed the three-quarters mile Strathmore Purse at the same track in June. Last Saturday, the VanBerg filly was beaten but a length by Starboard Stables Bated Breath in the Speed Burners Handicap. VanBerg announced here this morning that jbckey Willie Zakoor will have the mount on Whiffenpoof in the Great Lakes and that Howard Craig, who is displaying excellent saddle form here this year, is engaged for Chic Wave. Major competition for the VanBerg duo in the Great Lakes probably will be furnished by Jerry Lynchs hardrhitting Lonoke Flash, pegged at 116 pounds, and Bated Breath, assigned 115 pounds. Bated Breath, a six-year-old Okapi mare, evened her score with Lonoke Flash last Saturday when she downed the Lynch gelding; Chic Wave, McGrathiana, Black Racer and Ballydam in the Speed Burners. Springbrook Farms Pur Sang, a five-year-old stallion, the get of Side Boy and Contrary Mary, who has been absent from the races since he finished second to Dun-treath Farms Falstf in the one mile Dominion Purse at the Detroit Race Course in July, is slated to return to action in the Great Lakes. Owned by the Detroiter, Reuben Kowall, Pur Sang is favorably-weighted at 107 pounds and it must be remembered that he whipped good class company in three major engagements last year. Pur Sang, a good stakes winner, turned in one of his outstanding efforts during his juvenile campaign, capturing the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at the direct expense of Bernwood and Mameluke after stepping that, eight furlongs over the Churchill Downs strip in 1:36. Others entered in the Great Lakes are Grace Kosibas Happy Queen, 102; Saginaw Stables "Badger, 111, recent victor in the Pontiac Purse; and Martha Pellicanes By Jupiter, who flashed high early foot in the McCuan Memorial, and slated to shoulder a feathery 113, pounds burden in the half-holiday headiiner. Also Mrs. Charles O. Schweitzers improved Radical, 110, and D. H. Wells consistent Black Bantam, successful in 14 outings in the last two seasons, pegged at 108 pounds. Best supporting offerings on the splendid Saturday nine-race card are the ,000 Infants Purse at six furlongs for two-year-olds and the ,000 Lake St. Clair Purse, a mile and one-sixteenth condition number for three-year-olds and upward. The Infants, spotted fourth on the week-end bill, drew a field of eight crack youngsters, representing seven interests, while the Lake St. Clair, sixth on the program, will be contested by a half dozen of the better middle distance performers campaigning at Hazel Park this season. Fox Covert Farms Cimmeona, 117 pounds, victress in her last three starts, one of which was a success in the 1953 edition of the Governors Stakes, again will clash with William E. Schmidts speedy Make A Note, who gets in the dash with 103 pounds, providing she is handled by an apprentice. Make A Note, who will be ridden by Don Holmes, ran second in the Governors behind Cimmerona, who will have the saddle services of Howard Craig. The top -regarded Cimmerona and Make A Note will meet D and H Stables Laurel Springs, who raced well in New Jersey, and Foster Son; Burke and Herkless Limit Greenie, Dave Singers Hangover, Mrs. George C. Whites Little Colonel, and Grace Kosibas improved Sub Factor. G. Y. Bookers Mad Hare, who will be ridden by apprentice Holmes, is the early-choice for the St. Clair. P. J. McMullens Dry Run holds a royal chance and Michigan Stables Caboose is expected to go well. Others named for the middle distance test are White Stables Speed o Light, Dorchester Farms Oreo, and Mrs. F. J. Voll-mers homebred stakes-winning mare, My Nell.
