The Communists released 150 Americans today, the most in one day since "operation big switch" started 17 days ago, amid reports that men captured in the last days of the Korean war may be freed tomorrow. French Strikes Cracking PARIS, France, Aug. 21. The United Front of French Labor, which for 17 days had defied the economic reforms program of Premier Joseph Laniel with a crippling series of nationwide strikes, cracked wide open today. Laborers, by the tens of thou- sands, began streaming back to work in nationalized industries and civil services in defiance of Communist pleas for a contin- uation of the work stoppages enforced by 2,000,000 workers. Iranian Ambassador Quits - WASHINGTON, D. C, Aug. 21. Iranian ambassador Allah-Yar Saleh, who support- ed ousted Iranian Premier Mohammed Mossadegh, has resigned his post in the United States. Saleh cabled his resignation to Tehran yesterday when helearned that Gen. Fazollah Zahedi had been offi- cially confirmed as the new prime minister, Brig.-General Romulo Withdraws MANILA, Philippines, Aug. 21. Brig. Gen. Carlos P. Romulo, former Philippines ambassador to the United States, today withdrew from the November presidential race and formed a coalition of his Demo- cratic third party with the Nationalist, a party of Roman Magsaysay. New Sultan Takes Over RABAT, French Morocco, Aug. 21. Moroccos snuff-taking new pro-French Sultan, formally took the throne today in the ancient religious capital of Fez, before more than 1,000 Moroccan and French notables. New Sultan Sidi Mohammed Moulay Ben Arafa, 64, a wealthy, scholarly land owner who enjoys taking snuff, received homage first at the dazzling mosque and palace in Marrakech, where he led praters of the Moslem faithful in Moroccos biggest religious festivan, Aid-El-Kebir. Adlai E. Stevenson May Report Adlai E. Stevenson may give President Eisenhower a report on his five-month fact-finding trip around the world. Stevenson rested yesterday at his estate in suburban Libertyville. He returned here Thursday night. Princess Margaret Is 23 BALLATER, Scotland, Aug. 21. A radiant Princess Margaret recejved a spray of white orchids for her 23rd birthday today but kept secret the name of her admirer. The box of orchids was among many packages that arrived for the Princess at Balmoral Castle. She was reported smiling and happy after receiving gifts and congratulations. Bert Andrews Dies DENVER, Colo., Aug. 21. Bert Andrews, 52, chief of the Washington Bureau of the New York Herald"Tribune and a member of the board of directors of the paper, died at St. Josephs Hospital here early Friday. He had been taken to the hospital Wednesday : after suffering a heart attack. The news of Andrews death was relayed to President Eisenhower. Quirino Sees Victory WASHINGTON, D. C, Aug. 21. Phillip-pines president Elpidio Quirino was said to feel today that his chances of re-election are better than ever as a result of Brig. Gen. Carlos P. Rumolos withdrawal from the race.
