A Seventeen Seeking Rockingham Finale Unbeaten Lassie Lea Engages Entry of Cant Please, John Willie, Joes Crest in Sprint By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent ROCKINGHAM PARK, Salem, N. H., Aug. 21. This popular countryside track closes one ofthe most successful summer sessions ever conducted in its 21 years existence Saturday with the best two-year-olds in the area having a chance to display their speed for a 5,000 purse. The event is named the Manchester and is an open allowance race for juveniles at six furlongs and 17 youngsters representing 12 different interests have been named overnight. Murlogg Farms Cant Please and A. H. Smiths By Jeepers are the highweights of the field with 119 pounds, two more than to be carried by T. M. Roachs John Willie, a stablemate of Cant Please, and Irving Gushens Arthur S. O. L. Fosters Repelled is in the Manchester with 114 pounds, which includes a five-pound apprentice allowance. Also at 114 are Joe W. Browns St. Tammany and I. C. McMahans Joes Crest, the third member of the coupling being trained by Odie Clelland, who conditions Cant Please and John Willie. Mrs. J. S. Letelliers Crimson King, M. and I. Pricketts Hat Box, and Mrs. J. Purpuras Cable Jack are bracketed at 112 pounds, one more than assigned to A. S. Moores Wal-Dot-O and B. A. Darios Lassie Lea. Bounding Thru, owned by Foster and coupled with Repelled, must carry 115, the same weight as Pollard and Harkins Close Out. George Wynhoffs Owo, 109; River Divide Farms First Ballot with 106 including a five-pound apprentice allowance, and Joe W. Browns Mel Leavitt at 103, with a seven-pound apprentice allowance, round out the field in what should be one of the top two-year-old events of the local season. Towroped Field Both Times Lassie Lea, a daughter of Battlefield who is unbeaten in two starts, will get her most acid test in the Manchester. The brown filly, who is possessed of- a world of early speed, won her two outings by eight and five lengths, respectively, and has not been extended. The fact that the Dario miss won on an "off" track and a fast racing strip is indication enough that she does not need "made to, order" track coditions to perform her best. Harold "Red" Keene, who appears to fit the good-looking filly with his hustling tactics, has been engaged to aid Lassie Lea in continuing her success. Cant Please accounted for the Duncan F. Kenner Stakes at Fair Grounds in New Orleans last winter and has displayed good speed in all his New England races. In one dash at Suffolk Downs, against the best opposition available, the Fighting Step colt appeared to be well on his way to another score when he lunged into the inner rail against the right-hand whipping of the veteran Joe Cavens. That unforeseen incident has alerted Odie Clelland to use a left-hand whip rider, which will probably be Darrell Madden. John Willie, winner of three impressive victories, and Joes. Crest, who has annexed a pair of triumphs, are capable stablemates. The trio figure very close off their respective races and gives Clelland a strong hand in the Manchester. The same is true of the Oscar Foster entry. Repelled has always been regarded as one of the top juveniles racing on the New England circuit. But his success has been hampered by erratic post performances. In his last start the son of Depth Charge or Through Bound broke alertly and clearly established the patience displayed by his owner. Bounding Thru started once, back in the early spring at Oaklawn Park, and raced greenly while finishing sixth. Since that time, particular care has been given the Through Bound Argella colt and his trials have been sensational. A speed-ball from the barrier, it will be interesting to witness Bounding Thrus alertness with. Lassie Lea in the race. Wal-Dot-O is a greatly improved daughter of Diplouq Counter; In her last five starts she won three straight and her last two have been bang-up seconds. Crimson King won his debut by eight lengths in the mud when sent back against Lassie Lea, also on an "off" track, the Kings Blue colt met his match. The Joe W. Brown pair of St. Tammany and Mel Leavitt do not enter tomorrows race with impressive records, but both were sent here from Saratoga and did not come along just for the ride. The former won a maiden race at Garden State Park in May and since that time has been well regarded despite getting beat by top-flight juveniles. Mel Leavitt is a highly regarded maiden. Arthur S., a winner of three races and -close up in a pair of juvenile stakes at Suffolk Downs, will have the services of Tony Continued on Page Fifty-Two Seventeen-Horse Field Named for Manchester Unbeaten Lassie Lea Expected To Be Favorite at Rockingham Continued from Page Four DeSpirito in the Manchester. That alone will earn the Alsab colt plenty of support in tomorrows feature. By Jeepers accounted for the 0,000 Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park for his third score of the season. Since that time the War Jeep Belgarain gelding started only "once, also at the Delaware track, and finished last. Special permission was granted the track by the New Hampshire Racing Commission to start 14 of the listed 17 juveniles in the Manchester. Ordinarily the local rule calls for 12 starters in any allowance race in this state. The main contention of the race escaped the "also eligible" list and a fitting climax to a successful race meeting nnnoars in stare for local natrons tomorrow.
