Boardwalk Offered in Two Divisions Name Total of 20 For Atlantic Stake Tuscany, Winner of His Last Three Races, Goes in Second; Armageddon Tops First Half By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J., Aug. 21. The popularity of turf racing was emphasized here Friday when 20 of the original 42 eligibles were entered for Saturdays eighth running of the 5,000 added Boardwalk Handicap. With such an excellent response, local officials elected to offer the one-mile grass fixture in two divisions, to be contested as the sixth and seventh races. The two highweights for the Boardwalk, Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Tuscany under 126 pounds and Cain Hoy Stables Armageddon, with 121 pounds as his impost, drew in separate divisions of the event and head their respective races. Opposing Tuscany in the second division of the Boardwalk, are the following: M. Tyson Gilpins Arson, 116; John L. Mc-Knights Thasian Hero, 115; D. J. Schneiders Elixir, 114; Clarence Hartwicks Sickles Image, 113; Walter A. Edgars Jack the Great, 111; Brookmeade Stables Picador, 110; Robert P. Levys Hueso and Joe Gavegnanos Joey Boy, 109 apiece and J. F. Piarullis Count Cavour, 102 pounds. Armageddons Rivals Listed In the Armageddon division of the Boardwalk are the following: Samuel A. Pecks Potpourri, 114; Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Royal Governor and Cherry-Oca Stables Tio Ciro, 112 each; Jacklyn Stables Bobs Alibi, 110; I. J. Collins Mohammedan; Brookmeade s Sunglow and A. P. Mergardts Apsley, 108 each; and Mc-Knights Blue Rhymer and Phantom Farms Nullify, each with 106 pounds. Tuscany hasnt raced on the grass, but he certainly has distinguished himself on the main courses throughout the East and seems certain to come up the choice in his end of the stake. The five-year-old son of The Rhymer has earned 7,950 this year while accounting for the Rowe Memorial, Toboggan, Salvator and Rumson, in the order named. He has raced once locally and was timed in 1:24 over a sloppy track while scoring a galloping victory. Turf course stakes winners pitted against Tuscany are Thasian Hero, winner of a division of the Longfellow at Monmouth Park, and Picador, hero of the 1951 runnings of the Atlantic City Turf and Ocean City hadicaps here. The latter has little to recommend this season, but may show improvement over the infield course. Possible "dark" horse in the Tuscany end of the fixture is Arson, an Italian-bred four-year-old who was quite proficient in his native land prior to coming to this country. In his juvenile season, he started nine times and was six times first and three times second. As a three-year-old, he won five of his 12 starts in stakes company. Sickles Image assured her present fitness as recently as Thursday when she was a galloping winner at six furlongs on the main track. The Boardwalk will offer her Continued on Page Fifty-Two Run Boardwalk Handicap In Two Sections Today Armageddon and Tuscany Head Respective Ends of Atlantic Stake Continued from Page Five an opportunity to regain stakes winning form for the first time this season. Elixir and Jack the Great are others who have raced well on the grass, while Hueso, Joey Boy and Count Cavour have good recent form. Armageddon, a tried and true turf performer, has always been fond of the local grass, having equalled the mile and a sixteenth course record last year in winning the Ventnor in 1:.44 flat. Another record holder on the local grass is Bobs Alibi, with a mile in 1:36. Armageddon last raced in July and was fourth behind Abbe Sting in the Laurance Armour Turf Handicap in Chicago. Bobs Alibi has raced once on the grass here and seemed a trifle short when second behind Potpourri. Blue Rhymer shapes up as the speed of this section of the Boardwalk, but eight furlongs may be a bit beyond her capabilities. Sunglow fared poorly in a recent outing, as did Mohammedan and Apsley. Nullify has come up with a fair race on occasion, while Royal Governor and Tio Ciro have shown little this year after having won many important stakes races in past seasons.
