High High Scud Scud Speeds Speeds Home Home in in Spartan; Spartan; Hilarious Hilarious Whips Whips Tea-Maker Tea-Maker at at Spa Spa : . Mid Century Meets Quintet at Hazel Grandview Stable Sophomore Coming Off Sparkling Score; But Why and Etelka Threats By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 24. Grand-view Stables Mid Century, a hard-hitting three-year-old son of Reaping Reward and Mideau, by Bull Dog, heads a field of six shifty middle distance performers scheduled to meet here Tuesday afternoon in. the one mile Wyandotte Purse. Mid Century, victorious last week end in the eight furlongs Romeo Peach Festival Purse, gets in the Wyandotte under 113 pounds and the colt will have the saddle services of jockey Howard Craig, who began Mondays racing third in the local riding standings, three winning mounts behind jockey Robert Lee Baird and apprentice Don Holmes, tied for major honors. Won Saturday by Three Lengths Mid Century coasted to an easy three-length decision over Darkie, Mikeaby, Big Hearted, Main Speaker and others of that class in his last Hazel Park engagement but, previous to that outing, he finished second here to Deep Blue in the Lake Michigan Purse. Before shipment from New York, Mid Century scored victories over speedy competition at Belmont Park and Aqueduct. The Reaping Reward-sired colts recent morning trials have been decidedly satisfactory to his conditioner, E. E. Russell. Jockeys Baird and Holmes have mounts in the Wyandotte; the former is to guide J. G. Ferraras But Why, 120 pounds, while young Holmes will be astride Mrs. V. E. Smiths Etelka, pegged at a feathery 107 pounds. But Why, a four-year-old Genl Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Mid Century Faces Quintet In Wyandotte at Hazel Park Continued from Page One Manager-sired colt, is a double victor this year, having visited the winners ring at the New Orleans Fair Grounds and he also trimmed a good field here last week in the eight furlongs Jockeys Guild Purse. Etelka, a seven-year-old mare, the get of Hash and Sis Baker, won an overnight event at Chicago early this year, but she has failed to race to her best form during her Michigan campaign. Completing the probable Wyandotte Purse starting field will be D and H Stables Point Fortune, 117, Grace Kosibas locally-owned Slipper Satin, 112, and River Downs Stock Farms Irish-bred Bay Bloom, 120 pounds. Point Fortune, who will make his Motor City debut in the Tuesday headliner, is a four-year-old gelded son of Whirlaway, and raced rather well in the East; Slipper Satin is an improved racer ,while Bay Bloom looked good here August 13 in capturing the three-quarters mile Dequindre Purse, trimming Sistime, Fine Fiddle, Badger, Round n Round, Looks Bold and Pak. Jockey Willie Cox is to ride Point Fortune in the Wyandotte, Lois Cook will be at the reins on Slipper Satin, and Buddy Mills is engaged for Bay Bloom. Best supporting offering on the card is the six-furlong fourth, which will match a half dozen useful platers, three years old and older. Norman J. Hernandez, New Orleans turfman, will saddle William E, Schmidts Nobility for the dash and he announced this morning that jockey Cook will have the mount on the Schmidt gelding. Nobility, probable choice for the dash, will engage Mary and John Bauers Even Step, George Zakoors Broad Cross, P. J McMullens Detroit-owned Whitleather, R C. Groffs speedy but erratic Billies Ann; and Mr. Dink, from the Texas-owned stable of E. H. Moody.
