Official Family Named For Golden Gate Fields Able George W. Schilling Heads Stewards for Next Albany Meet GOLDEN GATE FIELDS, Albany, Calif., Aug. 24. Officials for the 40-day Golden Gate Fields meeting, which opens Monday, September 14, have been announced by Charles E. Coughlin, general manager of the Albany course, following their approval by the California Horse Racing Board. George W. Schilling, veteran international offical, will serve as presiding steward, a post he also holds at Tanforan, Bay Meadows, Agua Caliente, and on the Western Canadian Prairie circuit. The 1953 season will be the first for Schilling as a member of the Golden Gate Fields official family. George Murphy is the steward representing the California Horse Racing Board, while R. E. "Lanny" Leighninger will serve as associate steward. As previously announced, Barry Whitehead will return as racing secretary, a position he held at the 1947 Golden Gate meeting. N Andrew Ferguson was named paddock judge, with Sid Swanson succeeding the late Eddie Thomas as starter. William Mil-ner is the clerk of scales. Other appointments announced by Coughlin include: George C. Zarelli, Jack Glendower and Milner, placing judges; Alfred E. Shelhamer, Charles A. Mullaney and Ferguson, patrol judges; R. R. Brown, timer; E. F. Hayes, assistant clerk of scales and custodian of jockeys room; L. J. Cook, veterinarian representing the Calfiornia Horse Racing Board, and Robert Galloway, custodian of boys dormitory.
