Y., Aug. 24. Wheatley Stables Hilarious, a three-year-old son of Bimelech Laughter, by Johnstown, who was considered one of the leaders of the generation last season, but who has met with a variety of misfortunes since then, partially redeemed his sadly tarnished reputation when he scored a game victory in this afternoons featured event, the six-furlong Gansevoort Handicap. Almost an equal choice, in the wagering with Tea-Maker, the Fitzsimmons entry of Hilarious and Hyphasis returned .20, but the many followers of this popular barn had their anxious moments during the drive, and it was only in the final strides that Hilarious succeeded in disposing of the veteran gelding, Tea-Maker, a short head back under the wire, while Sandtop was two full lengths farther to the rear in third place. War Poppy, Hyphasis Unlucky at Break Circle M Farms War Poppy went in the air as the field of 10 sprinters left the gate for the Gansevoort, while the eventual winners stablemate, Hyphasis, refused to break at all. First to show in front, and leader for a rapid half was Jet Master, but both Hilarious and Tea-Maker were well placed, and when the serious issue was joined at the top of the homstretch, this pair swept past Jet Master to assume command. At the furlong pole and still at the sixteenth marker, game old Tea-Maker held a diminishing margin over the stubborn Hilarious, the latter conceding his elder two pounds on the Scale, but in receipt of five pounds in actual weight. Little by little, Hilarious narrowed the gap, and he was definite the stronger at the end. Sandtop came from far back to take the show award from the failing Jet Master, but he was never a serious opponent to the top pair. A small group of our better three-year-olds tangled in the mile Scaroon Manor Purse, secondary feature of the off-day card witnessed by 12,604 fans. This race went to the lightly weighted son of Challedon, Putney, who bested Shamrock and Blaze with a trip in 1:39. Louis B. Mahlon Klines Flaw, Proceed, Escarp and four others in 3:30 for the mile and tree quarters. This event was marred by what may prove a serious fall for Carlyle Cameron, rider of Repose, who fell heavily at the second obstacle and who was taken direct to the hospital in the track ambulance. As far as could be seen from the press box, Cameron was not struck by any of the field, although he was riding in the middle of the bunch at the time of the fall. Mrs. Rea Wingfields Escarp, starting back after being a keen contender in a hurdle race last Saturday, was the pacemaker today, but the Caruso gelding tired in the final quarter mile, while Mailing List, high weight with 144 pounds in the saddle, finished with speed to spare. Brookmeades five-year-old Questionnaire gelding paid .00, and was entered to be claimed for ,500. Both Flaw and Proceed were patiently ridden and responded well in the drive, but neither fencer proved able seriously to menace the winner.
