I Connors Corner By "CHUCK" CONNORS Spa Cup Will Not Be Exhibition Max Hirsch Hard at Work Again Sunglow Will Seek Meadowland SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 24. The members in good standing of the paddock gang put in a busy weekend at impromptu . ; i meetings staged at gathering places in the surrounding area. The boys vacated Saratoga Springs and gave Broadway over to the natives and the few tourists who stopped for gas, oil or a bite to eat. Racing of course, was the main topic. The Union Avenue course was favored this year by good weather, perfect for sleepmg, and those old electric storms that in other years roared through the valley, rain, lightning and thunder were missing. This week is highlighted by some interesting stake offerings, the Alabama and Hopeful are the standouts but a repetition of the exhibition may show up on Friday. This could be the Saratoga Cup over the mile and six furlongs distance with a monetary award of 5,000. Nominations for the event were closed in June and 28 horses were made eligible. The name of Native Dancer is on the list, but he wont start. A search through the list of eligibles indicates that the field will be very small. Some nominees have earlier engagements, others are sidelined with injuries and then there are those who just do not measure up. Max Hirsch, who underwent surgery at Harkness Pavilion, N. Y., prostrate trouble, was discharged from the hospital Sunday. He flew up from New York to Albany and motored over from that city. His first task was to inspect the horses, the majority were sidelined by coughing, and then report that he was ready to return to his training chores... Thomas J, Crof ton, owner and trainer from County Mayo over in Ireland, showed up Monday and reversed the trend that has-been in force for some time. He came over to buy some horses to be shipped back to the auld sod. . .Trainer J. P. Jones will ship the. horses he has here to Belmont Park the latter part of this meeting Sunglow, winner of the Boardwalk Handicap at Atlantic City will be shipped to Washington Park for the Meadowland Handicap, the grass stake at that track over the week-end. He will be ridden by jockey Charles Burr. Trainer Preston Burch pointed out that the score was the first for the Brookmeade representative since he won the Widener at Hialeah in 1951. He was on the ailing list the better part of of the interval. Mr. and Mrs. George D. Widener are at present in Switzerland on their European vacation, but will be back in New York before the opening of the Belmont Park session. . .Sam H. McCormick altered his plans and will not be a Saratoga visitor for the final days of the meeting. During the Belmont Park meeting he will confer with John C. Clark Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Connors Corner By C. J. CONNORS Continued from Page Two and Charles J. McLennan, relative -to the winter meeting: at Hialeah. Bill Gargan, of the films, radio and television, arrived over the week end for his annual vacation. He was greeted by Jack Cambpbell, Francis P. Dunne and Lou Wal-ger, and initiated into the corn chewers union . .Trainer Bobby Dotter reported the arrival of Landlocked, owned by James Cox Brady and runner-up in the American Derby, from Washington Park. . .Solly and Johnnie Pisicano showed up over the week end and reported that the town has changed, following an absence of several years. . .Royce Martin returned from New York, and business matters, and witnessed the week-end program. . .Peter Issaris, the Saratogian, reported that he had shipped Paramount Pete, Greek Admiral and a yearling acquired from the Aly Khan, to Crown Crest Farm in Kentucky, to be turned out for some time. c Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Lewis left for their Richmond, Va., home, but promised to make a trip to Belmont Park later in the fall. . .Jockey Nick Shuk will be here from Atlantic City to ride Grecian Queen, owned by Mrs. Flornce Whitaker, in the Alabama on Wednesday. . .Bill Dobbs loaded the horses he had here and headed for Belmont Park to await the opening-of the New York fall season. . .The busiest man in Saratoga these days is the New Yorker Walter Rumple. He is hot walker, grazer and general factotum in the care of his yearling over at George Odoms menage. That the youngster has a good disposition was proved the other morning. While being led around the cooling out ring adjacent to the stable, Skippy, the stable mascot, ancestry, part boxer, part Schnauzer and parts un- known, grabbed the colt by the tail and went along for a ride, much to the amusement of all concerned. Dr. and Mrs. Errington left for their California home, following a few days here. . . .Royal Governor, owned by Mrs. E. du-Pont, Weir, was shipped to the Delaware i Farm from Atlantic City and will move : over to Belmont Park for New York engagements the latter part of this week. . . . .Frank Sullivan, the chronicler of the ! . doings of Saratoga Springs, showed up for the week-end program. He was on the ailing list for some time, nothing serious just the virus, so he said.. .A. G. Vander-bilts Native Dancer and Beachcomber arrived today from Washington Par.
