Eight Sophomores In Late Date Purse Ride M Cowboy, Abidjan and Pass Play Go in Turf Course Feature at Atlantic City By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff CorrespoiidentJ ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J., Aug. 24. With the impending 0,000 added Philadelphia Turf Handicap in view, racing secretary John P. Turner, Jr. Tuesday will offer three-year-olds a grass opportunity in the ,000 Late Date Purse. Eight members of the division, several of whom may see action in the coming sophomore stake, have been entered to vie at a mile and one-sixteenth. The field for the Late Date includes the following: Janet N. Kellys Ride M Cowboy, B. L. Williams Pass Play, KayGee Stables Red Jeep arid Go a Bit, Guy de la Fregonnierres Abidjan, Arbywood Stables Harass, Harry B. Cohens Buck n Gee and Prisjoe Stables Nebullus. While Ride M Cowboy lacks experience on the infield course, he appears the class of the field, largely of f his splendid second behind Landlocked in the Choice Stakes at Monmouth Park. Since that outing he was beaten about a half dozen lengths when unplaced behind Skipper Bill at seven furlongs in the opening-day Pageant Handicap. Double Winner at Meeting Abidjan, who had little to recommend prior to the opening of the current meeting, has won two purses in as many appearances, the last one being over the turf course. In that outing he won by two and one-half lengths in. 1:47 while operating under a 0,000 claiming banner. His fondness for the going, plus an abundance of early speed may hold him in good stead. Pass Play, a son of Pass Out, is another who won his last start, beating seasoned performers, including Bank Coal and Again n., while covering a mile and a sixteenth over the main course in 1:45. He, too, lacks infield experience but has shown speed over various types of conditions on the main track. Buck n Gee and Red Jeep raced together recently and finished necks apart while first, and second, respectively. The former was timed in 1:45 flat for the mile and a sixteenth and will handle the same weight tomorrow, while Ked Jeep picks up" two pounds. Red Jeeps stablemate, Go a Bit, was beaten slightly more than three lengths by Judy Dunstan last week while sprinting. Harass is another who was behind Judy Dunstan finishing in a dead heat for second while beaten only a head. The additional distance tomorrow should prove to his advantage Nebullus boasts a trip of victories this season but was beaten more than a dozen lengths by Pass Play in his last start.
