Heron Lake Clicks In Gansett Upset Shiny Peter Beaten Head By Victor; Two Spills in , Fifth Race Mar Program By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., Aug. 24. Shawmut Stables Heron Lake, receiving a well judged ride from Keith Stuart, substitute rider for Evan Jenkins, who was injured in a spill in the fifth race, provided a mild upset in the featured Red Bridge Purse as Narragansett Park opened its 24-day autumn meeting today before a crowd of 12,662. The Piping Rock filly came to the end of the mile and 70 yard event, a head before C. H. Bocks Twig Lee, with Peter Laudatis Shiny Peter taking the minor award, three parts of a length back of the runner-up and about the same distance in front of E. J. Arnolds Pacoy. The favored Llangollen Farms Tall Tree wound up fifth in the field of nine sophomores which contested for the ,000 purse. Ideal weather prevailed as Gansett started its last portion of the twentieth season anniversary. The attendance was slightly below that of the crowd which were present a year ago, but the wagering appeared brisk and another successful season was launched. Johnson and Jenkins Go Down The racing program was marred by a nasty spill in the fifth event, a six-furlong dash for two-year-olds. Ted Johnson, veteran Canadian rider was. astride Mill River Stables Popadaris, who stumbled and tossed the boy heavily to the turf as the field broke from the barrier. Evan Jenkins, rider of T. B. Cromwells Dudu Gal, also was tossed to the ground, I but oddly enough separate incidents caused 1 the spill. Popadaris bad luck stemmed from the ground breaking out from under him, and when he went down he was clear of the field, starting from the outside post position. Jenkins mount was breaking from the No. 4 position, and she broke into the favored King For AH, and before she could regain her posture had lost the rider. Both boys remained prone until the ambulance arrived, and after a quick examination they were transferred to the Pawtucket General Hospital. The early reports reveal Johnson suffered back and shoulder injuries, while Jenkins, the lesser injured of the two, was suffering from backache. Darrell Madden was the riding star of the afternoon, guiding three winners in the early events, one of which was in a dead-heat for the opener. Arctic Ike shared winning the first race with First Bar. In the fourth race Madden drove Mona Lou to victory and came back in the fifth to gain his easiest triumph with Del Tex. Maid. The luck ran out in the feature when Tall Tree failed to respond after being rated to the final quarter-mile.
