Aughill Worthy Substitute For Pollys Jet in Dover Decisively Beats Two Opponents Ta Indicate Own Potential Class By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent . DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 29. Aughill, a two-year-old Royal Charger maiden from the Barclay Stable of John McShain, paraded postward as a 3-to-10-favorite in the seventeenth running of this afternoons Dover Stakes and emerged victorious by two and one-half lengths while breezing five and a half furlongs in 1.05 Vs. The only other starters were Mrs. Royal Firman, Jr.s Black Frost, who finished second, and Leon Santores Flying Teddy, who was four lengths farther back. The race was devoid. -of apparent class when Pollys Jet, unbeaten stableiriate of the winner, and Richard A. Lewis First Lap, as well as Nelson Lodges Sparton Haste were withdrawn from the starting line-up. Aughill, however, may yet develop into a topnotch member of the juvenile division. Second in his recent debut, the English-bred bay gave the impression of having considerable speed in reserve as he toyed with his opposition in the Dover and he could conceivably be a match for Pollys Jet before the season ends. With straight wagering only on the Dover, the Mutuel pool was 8,682, with 9,376 of that total being wagered on Continued on Page Seven Aug hi 1 1 Leads Two Dover Rivals Home Proves Worthy Substitute For Pollys Jet; Indicates His Own Potential Class Continued from Page One Aughill, making for a .60 return. The efforts of the good-looking youngster earned his owner 0,075 of a 3,800 gross purse. Warm, sunny weather prevailed for the afternoons sport and the crowd was estimated at 13,000. Aughill had no trouble in asserting himself, attaining a clear lead in the opening strides and steadily increasing his advantage. Nick Shuk merely flicked him with the whip near the three-sixteenths pole, following which he took the colt under a tight grip and coasted to the score. Black Frost trailed in the early stages hut had enough late foot to wear down Flying Teddy, the latter faltering badly following his futile effort to stay within striking distance of the leader early. In withdrawing Pollys Jet from the Dover field, trriner Russell Downes stated that the Polynesian colt, who has won all six of his races, including a quartet of stakes events, would be reserved for the forthcoming Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park. Shuk Scores With Besomer Shuks victory in the previous race was astride Companas Stables Besomer, who, in his previous local outing took the measure of Aughill by a nose. The good-looking Double Jay colt led throughout and galloped home six lengths in the van, while breezing the distance of the stake in 1:05, three-fifths slower than time credited to the Dover winner. Besomer was not made eligible for the Dover but the manner in which he scored suggested that he is capable- of giving Aughill a race for his money at any time. He was a solid .00 choice and led home Cedar Farms Acclivity and Mrs. A. Riggs, 4ths Grand Refrain. The Montchanin Handicap series was completed with the running of the sixth race, with Edward S. Voss, Jr.s Go a Bit, a front-running victor in time of 2:59 for a mile and six furlongs. The margin of victory enjoyed by the 9.20 chance was four lengths, with Ray Mikkonen urging him mildly through the home lane. In a three-way photo, Mrs. Mildred Hammonds Mid-ian, Walter J. Appels Tip n. and Milford Dinkers Alford, finished as named. In winning the last two runnings Go a Bit brought to 60 his total point scoring in the series, thus picking up the ,200 top award. Earning the second award with 39 points was Alford, with Plenary and Hop-lite, the latter a non-starter today, finished with 36 points apiece to split the third and fourth awards.
