i Spur On Going to Detroit For Governors Handicap-High Weight Under 122 Pounds For Detroit Holiday Feature By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent " DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 29. Marvin E. Affeld and Bernard W. Landys Spur On, 1954 winner of the 0,000 Michigan Mile, will arrive here Friday to keep his July 4 engagement in the Governors Handicap, according to word received from Arlington Park today. The Illinois-owned invader, a seven-year-old son of Whirlaway and Still Blue is the high weight for the six furlongs holiday feature at 122 pounds. The Affeld-Landy stallion will, of course, start in this years edition "of the Mile on July 9, barring a mishap between now and post time. Jockey Arnold Kirkland has been engaged to handle Spur On in the Governors Spur On has been to the post 10 times this season and, thus far lias posted a "three-two-two" record for earnings of 4,525. Last year the Affeld and Landy Star picked up 5,745, and his major success in the Mile was worth 1,925. Speak Free, a seven-year-old Four Free-1 doms-sired gelding, pegged at 110 pounds for the Governors, is due from Cleveland late today. One of the better performers to show in Ohio during the past-two years, Speak Free is a homebred, the property of J. D. Rogers. Should Speak Free give a good account of himself in the Governors he undoubtedly will be a starter in the Mile. While Spur On and Marion H. VanBergs Knights Reward, 120 pounds, are the early choices for the Independence Day head-liner, several other eligibles have shown enough to merit consideration in the sprint. C. and P. Farms Swivet, 117; T. Alie Gris-soms Money Broker, 116, Thomas P. Dev-ereux Greatest, 114, Theodore D. Buhls Second Avenue, 1953 Michigan Mile winner, 113, and Mrs. George C. Whites Trip Lightly, 108 pounds, are rated dangerous at their weights. Best race on the Thursday card is the Petoskey Purse, a one mile condition race for three-years-olds. Seven of the better second-year racers are named for the feature and these represent six wagering interests. Charles F. Wagner will saddle Mr. .Duty, the property of Catherine Burt, and Ocala Gal, who races for the Wagner and Reiber partnership. Ro-Mar Stables Bon-Ru-Mar, Buhl Stables Niral, Ypsilanti Stables Argument. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Evys Newate, a recent local winner, and Waldo D. Andrews So Bet Me are others expected to answer "boots and saddles" for the Petoskey.
