Fife and Drum Hits Wire Length Ahead of Ronas Madden Closes Fast With Victor; Favored Country Gossip Third By JOE HIRSCH NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 29. W. Mortons Fife and Drum rushed through the stretch in the featured Waverly Purse to run down Henry Kimballs Rbnas and score by a driving length. The latter, who. had wrested command briefly from Mrs. Mark Sarians front-running Country Gossip after the sixteenth pole, was the runner-up while Country Gossip was a mere neck back for third money. A crowd of 9,276 turned out in bright, sunny weather, and established Country Gossip a 6-5 choice, and saw him lead for much of the mile and a sixteenth of the Waverly. But Darrell Madden, after staying off the early pace, closed quickest of all with Fife and Drum for the tally and a .60 payoff. The winners time was a moderate 1-.45V5 and he carried 112 pounds, enjoying an eight-pound pull from the favorite. Fife and Drum is a seven-year-old Amphitheatre stallion, claimed by the young Providence, R. I. trainer, Mike Freeman, at Saratoga last summer for ,000 from Hash Weinstein. The hard-hitting horse went on to a most successful campaign, winning six and accumulating 0,725 in purse monies. This year he hasnt been the same performer and todays tally was his first, coming on the heels of a series of mediocre efforts. Ronas broke on top in the feature, but Country Gossip was first to the clubhouse turn and reached the backstretch a pair of lengths to the good of Receipt with Ronas now a head farther back in third place. .Marshall Wilder had a handful of rein aboard the leader along the inside and Country Gossip looked like he could go on all day; Receipt and Ronas following him to the far turn. Madden, was beginning to move with Fife and Drum now and curving for home drew Closer to the first flight. At the head of the stretch, he was in a contending position, but Country Gossip was still the leader at the eighth pole. Receipt faded, but Ronas held on doggedly as Country Gossip led the way to the sixteenth marker. Here, Ronas passed the flagging leader, but relinquished her lead in turn to Fife and Drum with 70 yards remaining, the Morton horse continuing on for the tally. Madden registered a double when he tallied with Mrs. L. A. Grills Big Stick in the eighth race. Lady Dil received an exceptionally well judged ride from apprentice John E. Smith in the sixth race, leading every step of the way to bring the red and blue colors of Mrs. Quincy Adams Shaw McKean home 2V2 lengths to the good of N. J. McClures Red Pass with J. L. Arvanites Yang-Ke another three lengths farther back.
