Belairs Nashua, in the race for not only nationaKhonors, but best three-year-old and Horse of the Year, took the Belmont Stakes in easy fashion during the latest 30-day period covered by the statistics to increase his margin over Rex C. Ellsworths Swaps, his conqueror in the Kentucky Derby. Nashua pulled farther away from his persistent rival in the money-winning race despite Swaps world record-breaking victory over older horses in the Californian at Hollywood Park. Swaps ran the mile and one-sixteenth of the Californian in 1:40, two fifths of a second faster than the Irish horse, Poona II. established last winter at Santa Anita. Swaps turned back Determine, 1954 Kentucky Derby victor, in his brilliant performance. Nashua had earned 60,825 to 94,250 for Swaps through June 25, with the rich Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct this Saturday apparently at the mercy of the big, playful, but business-like son of Nasrullah. The totals at the conclusion of racing May 30 were 77,125 for Nashua; 30,550 for Swaps. The Hasty House Farm of Mr. and Mrs. Allie "Reuben was toppled from the top of the owner standings by Belair and 311s worth, respectively. On May 31, Hasty House led Belair 19,909 to 09,515, with Ellsworth having 86,167 to his credits But Nashuas Belmont triumph contributed the most to vaulting his owner, William Woodward, Jr., to the top with 99,475. Jockey Battle Creates Interest Ellsworths money-winning total entering last Mondays racing was 89,412. Hasty House had dropped to third place with 44,934. Hartack, who has been closing the gap on the perennial leader, Shoemaker, for the past two months, caught the latter during the major part of June .in their battle for the riding championship. They had 188 winners apiece going into last Mondays competition. However, Hartack had tj do a lot more riding than his West Coast rival to catch him. On May 30, when the last previous tabulation was made, Shoemaker led, 161 winners to 151. Since that time, through June 25, however, "The Shoe" had only 98 mounts, and boasts a winning percentage of .27. Meanwhile, Hartack rode 149 horses to compile a winning percentage of .23. for the year. Ted Atkinson still Jield third place with 131 victors, while Esteban" Gonzales was fourth with 107 and Steve Brooks fifth at the 102-mark. Shoemaker missed five days of riding due to a suspension, and another day because of a toothache, after missing the money in the first race. Molter, a persistent contemporary of the late R. H. McDaniel, held a slim lead over T. L. Altamira, 56 winners to 55. F. H. Merrill, Jr., was another two saddle successes behind. McDaniel still led Molter7 48 winners to 46, on May 30.
