Ak-Sar-Ben Presenting Final Twilight Program Nine Shifty Sprinters Slated To Match Strides in Feature By DEAN WILLIAMS Staff Correspondent AK-SAR-BEN, Omaha, Nebr., June 29. The , final twilight program of the 1955 Ak-Sar-Ben racing season is carded to be run Thursday afternoon with the first field going postward at 3:30 p. m. CST. These twilight programs have become so popular that Thursday draws crowds second in size only to the" week-end racing. The sixth race for a purse of ,000 has been dubbed the American Legion Purse and drew a field of nine first-class sprinters. The six-furlong test will bring together Wayne Davidsons Freedoms Pride, Morton Whitebrooks Abolere, W. R. Cluers Chittagong, W. G. Alexanders Step Alone, G. Murphys Flashy Ways, Wally Coopers Undone, Roricle and Lanes Blue Call, Olin Sledges McCreight, and Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Burgess Magic City. Step Alone, Undone and Magic City are the only ones of the group who have not reached the winners circle at the current meeting. McCreight, a winner of two races this year at Ak-Sar-Ben, turned in his best effort in his last out in the Ak-Sar-Ben Council Purse, in which he defeated Tick-apoo and Blue Call in 1:10, one of the better times posted for the six-furlong distance. His other winning effort was on the third day of the meeting, going five and one-half furlongs. The Sledge color-bearer worked three furlongs this morning in :35, giving every indication he has retained his sharp edge. The presence of Murphys Flashy Ways is certain to be felt in Thursday afternoons feature. The son of Flash o Night and Changing Ways has won two races at the Omaha oval and a total of five races for the year and purse earnings of 2,837. He won his first start here opening day by six lengths. Five days later he gained a head decision over Appointment. Since then he has not been worse than fourth in any of his starts. The smalL bay gelding has gained a great many followers through his consistency. H. G. Wells Dog Fish was booted to a three-quarters of a length victory over Cross Ring before a crowd of 9,957 Tuesday. Jockey Fritz Becker had the three-year-old son of Spotted Bull in front before a quarter -of a mile, turning in a : 22 quarter and, a :45 half with the entire five furlongs being covered in :57. Cross Ring was making his usual late bid under the handling of Richard Lawless, but was too far off the pace to catch Dog Fish. The speedy colt was lightly regarded and returned 6.80.
