— — — m Reports From Foreign Racing Centers Gel-many 1 Fans Disappointed At Orsinis Loss By PHILIP SUWALL Our Frankfurt Correspondent FRANKFORT. — How disappointing, bitter and unnecessary the shocking reversal of Orsini last Sunday in the mile and one- half Cologne Stakes! Albert Klimscha rode an utterly impossible tactic astride the scorching 7-to-10 favorite. Down the opposite side, Orsini trailed the early leaders. Agio and Ober-maat, by nearly 15 lengths. Entering the long Cologne straight, the medium-sized international star was still a good 10 lengths behind Astas huge colt, Obermaat. The other three members of the field, Aletsch, Agio and Pfalzteufel, were no longer in serious contention. Klimscha fumbled badly in his miscalculated speed run from mid-stretch. For a moment, it appeared that the one-sided public1 choice would close the gap * as Orsini charged into contention some 100 yards from the finish. But Hein Bollow had waited like a fox. Just as Orsini hit the front, he smacked the powerful black colt twice and Obermaat responded to eke out a short head verdict. Time of the stake was a nexcellent 2:33. The large Cologne attendance openly expressed a disliking for Klimschas hardly understandable belated tactic. Certainly the best horse did not win . last Sunday. Senator Adolf Schindling, proprietor of Gestuet Asta, was present to witness the grand triumph of Obermaat, a shimmering colt by the French import, Goody, from the Ticino mare, Offenbarung. Obermaat seems more horse than a year ago. He is a serious factor if shipped to France next week for Saint Clouds Grand Prix de Printemps. Hans Blume has achieved wonders with this late-developing colt who trailed Orsini badly in the 3-year-old classics. Orsinis bitter defeat underlined the disturbing fact that Gestuet Erlenhof has yet to win a race in the current season. The stable had further misfortune the same afternoon with their .sprint queen Niobe Pearl Diver — Nixe in Hannovers 2,400 "Industrie-Messe Preis" at a mile. Niobe, unprepared at the break, ran a brilliant race but dropped a close photo decision to Hein Bischoffs recent French import King David by Devonian — Kings-caval. Time was a swift 1:37. As a sophomore, King David placed fourth in Newmarkets 2,000 Guineas. After two starts in West Germany, the colt has proved himself top-class at middle distances. A field of a dozen is expected Sunday in Dusseldorf -Grafenbergs 5,000-Schwarzgold Mile, the German equivalent of Newmarkets One Thousand Guineas. This filly group seems a notch or two above the normal and a keen, interesting race is foreseen. All ladies carry 123 pounds. On the strength of a surprise success last« Sunday at Cologne at the expense of «Mydlinghofens Derby hopeful, Feuereifer, Zoppenbroichs Som- « merblume by Neckar may become the Schwarzgold betting favorite. Her breeding suggests a high degree of consistency. Your correspondent , plans on backing Gestuet Hosiers light and lean filly Ascona, principally on her excellent ancestry. Ascona is sired by the Derby winner Mangon by Gundomar • from the broodmare Alma Mater, an unlucky runner-up in Kalibers 1954 derby. Ascona impressed all with her colossal late burst in Colognes "Early Year Filly Prize," a semi-classic which is a reliable indication of things to come in the filly ranks. Other probable starters in the Schwarzgold are: Astas pair of Oda by Neckar and Ostafrika Vieux Manoir; Stall Blonays Wildrose Singlspieler ; Gestuet Ebbeslohs Acera Mangon; Mydlingho-fens Plauderei by Abendfrieden ; Wald-frieds Aegina Goody; Gestuet Wester-bergs Esplanade Ticino and Ravens-bergs Wiesenbluete Neckar. Neither Erlenhof or Schlenderhan are represented in Sundays Schwarzgold. T Last week Willie Schuetz journeyed to Hannover where he continued in remarkable form. Martinique, under Herbert Cohn, captured a valuable steeplechase from the highly-regarded Landlord owned by Werner Baechtold. In a* flat handicap, the clever trainers "half-blood" Domherrin, defied a crushing penalty of 155 pounds, uiuler Herbert Cohn, to gain a hard-fought half-length success. In a* lesser handicap, Doinher-rins full sister, Domglocke was an easy two-length winner to complete a Schuetz triple. The trainer already has scored 14 points in the first two months racing. His runners perform equally well on the flat, over hurdles and fences. Furthermore, Schuetz is a prudent manager of his versatile runners and usually gets a generous weight allowance in "condition" races. Schnitzel: After April declarations, 55 colts and fillies remain eligible for Hamburgs 4,000 Blue Ribbon Derby in July. These include the Danish entry Sailor, the Swedish Orfeus and the Austrian pair, Fram and Galere. French, English and Italian-breds are not eligible for the classic. . . . Latest Derby callover posts Ravensbergs Waidmann _ at 7-to-2, although this sleek Neckar colt is untried at three. After Waidmann, Schlenderhans Basuto at 4-to-l; Roettgens Waldcanter at 6-to-l; Erlenhof s Aspiration at 8-to-l and Stall Marienfelds Bennigsen at 9-to-l. . . . According to a German press release, there are 300 race courses in the Soviet Union. . . . Badens Grosser Preis in 1959 will gross 4,000. There will be five days of racing the last week in August and purse distribution will reach about 2,000, an increase of ,800 over last season. . . . Madame Volterras excellent four-year-old Noelor »ias nominated for Dusseldorfs Grosser Preis von Nordrehin-Westfalen along with Francois Dupres Gric and M. J. Cunnigtons Amourrou, both three-year-olds. Orsini is also among the German candidates for Dusseldorf. • Werner Baechtolds most recent French purchase, the five-year-old Champleuvier by Delirium — Damoiselle m. won at first asking in Aarau, Switzerland last week. Under Swiss amateur E. Delaquis, Champleuvier was three lengths before Stall Uetlis Inedit. . . . Krefelds Gestuet Myd-linghofen, which has a division in Brussels, recorded the initial two-year-old success of a German-bred with the filly, Pergola. This Val Drake miss downed 11 juveniles at Groenendael. ... A pair of three-year-olds, Salomon by Schwarzkuenstler and Argwohn by Goody were impressive last Sunday in handicap successes against older horses. Salomon carried top weight of 130 pounds. Perhaps, a good omen for the 1956 generation.
