Maribu Shows Best at Sportsmans Completes Double For Bishop Stable Four-Year-Old Decisions Odd-on Cols Choice in Dash After Bay Leaf Wins By TEDDY COX SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 8. — The familiar blue, Maroon, and white silks of William Hal Bishop, legendary Anna, HI., former horse and mule trader, were borne to an impressive triumph when Maribu accounted for the Brecon Beacons Purse before a crowd of 8,276, who apparently forgot that the stable for many years dominated the racing scene over this track. The colt proved best in a hard drive here this fine afternoon over the odds-on favorite, Cals Choice, owned by Marion H. VanBerg. Two lengths farther away came E. J. Grosfields Johns Bid, while Mrs. Emil Denemarks Camelback was fourth. Maribu, who was regarded as the weaker part of the Bishop entry that included Rock-port, was perfectly ridden by Evan "Smok-ey" Anyon. Time for the dash of 6V2. furlongs was 1:17% and the winner paid a quite lucrative 9.60 mutuel. It was Bishops second victory of the day, for he also won the secodnary feature, the Breeders Purse with Bay Leaf. This was the first of the series of races under the Illinois-bred and owners program. Bishops horses recently arrived at Washington Park from Laurel, Md., where they dominated their foes. First Start Here Maribu was making his first start of the meeting, after having competed in a stake race at Laurel in his previous start. His opposition this time hardly rated with such company, even though Cals Choice was backed into odds-on favoritism. Maribu was perfectly rated from the start. Tony Skoronski rushed Cals Choice into a slight lead down the stretch the first time and through the backstretch, while Anyon wisely backed away from the pace. He waited until nearing the stretch was reached, where he hustled the colt to the front and then showed powerful stamina in a driving finish to withstand Cals .Choice. The Sun Dial Stables Miss Mandeville had to survive a claim of foul to hold her position in winning the first race when Anthony Skoronski, who was aboard Hi Fi Gal, claimed he was bothered at the head of the stretch by the filly. The daughter of Conjure and Empress, ridden by, Richard L. Barnett, was very slow to settle into best stride, but once on the move steadily improved her position while clipping through between horses on the last turn. Barnett then steered his mount to the inside of the leaders in the final sixteenth to get up in the last couple of strides, nosing out the favorite, No Pushover. Miss Mandeville, who was making her second start of the meeting, ran the 6 panels in 1:14% and was slightly overlooked by the fans, returning 8.60 to win. No Pushover, racing under the blue and white silks of Wallace Strong, was a strong contender from the start of the 6 furlongs race, and although racing on the outside turning for home, was able to maintain a short lead right down to the finish wire before forced to give ground to the winner. No Pushover finished a full length in rfont of R. A. Firestone Jr.s Queen of Sheeba. Skoronskis claim of foul was not allowed after the stewards scanned the film of the race.
