LILLIAN J. began fast and, after establishing a long lead in the early stretch, lasted to withstand SHADY SPOT. The latter, outrun to the stretch, closed determinedly but could not reach the winner. WINSOME WAYS raced wide entering the stretch. VELVET SHIELD could not better his position during the drive. VIXENS JOY tired. LEVEL COUP reached the lead between calls on the upper turn and held on well until inside the stretch, then gave way. THE HUNTER was through early. SCARLET SHEATH showed nothing. ROUGH SKETCH moved up fast approaching the stretch and, remaining in the middle of the track for the drive, disposed of LIGHTNING STAR and won going away. LIGHTNING STAR bumped with GALAVAN entering the stretch and, after establishing a good lead, was unable to hold the winner. GEMOLOGIST gave a fair effort and had no excuse. GALAVAN took an early lead but failed to stay after bumping with LIGHTNING STAR on the stretch turn. GRATITUDE lacked early foot. MY JANICE broke away from her handlers while on the way to the paddock and galloped back to her barn, began well in the race but tired after showing brief speed. DARLING LINDA and SWIG werernever dangerous. OUT OF TUNE was through early. The stewards posted the "inquiry" sign«following the finish, checked with patrol judges and viewed pictures of the LIGHTNING STAR-GALAVAN bumping before making the result official. BRIEF ENCOUNTER raced nearest TWOFOLD after the break but was not good enough for the winner. FAST GUN, forced wide entering the ■ stretch, finished determinedly when straight in the drive. CALAIS DOVER moved around horses entering the stretch and held on gamely during the drive but was not good enough for the winner. AIRSTREAM, prominent to the final furlong, tired. PUNTA GORDA, away fast, set the pace until inside the stretch and then weakened. CARNEAUX, QUEENS MOUNT and GENTLE TOUCH were unable to enter contention.
