1 Bernmattar Never Headed at Downs Holtsinger and Davis Colt Is Clear of First National at End of Sentiment Sake Purse By BUD LYON Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 8. — Dashing the hopes of many in the crowd of nearly 8,200 present here this afternoon in pleasant spring weather G. M. Holtsinger and Doug Davis Jr.s Bernmattar made every pole a winning one while accounting for the featured Sentiment Sake Purse at a mile and one-sixteenth. Lesser honors in the middle distance run fashioned exclusively for three-year-olds found R. E. Kroneriberger and A. Zees First National holding on to keep the place spot, finishing two and one-naif lengths shy of the winner, and five lengths before Mrs. L. E. Vaniers Sir Hawley who raced in the show spot the entire distance and was a 9-5 favorite with the crowd. Bernmattar was cleverly paced by John Heckmann in his front-running victory which found him racing the 1 1-16 miles in a fast 1:43%, following which he returned .40. " I I I Gallops Under Wire Just how the fans permitted Bernmattar to go away at such a price will remain one of the major mysteries of the meeting as the Bernborough colt in his last start was tried against the best in the nation in the Derby Trial and was far from disgraced in being beaten nine lengths by Open View, Fin-negan and Royal Orbit. Prior to that he tackled Tomy Lee, the Derby winner, in the Blue Grass Stakes, finishing 14 lengths shy at that time. True, he was never too close in either of these efforts, but his drop in caliber of opposition today was sufficient to serve notice that he was right back in his element. Bernmattar was on the bit all the way, racing the opening quarter mile in :23%, half mile in :47%, 6 furlongs in 1:12%, and reaching the one mile in 1:37, following which he was merely allowed to gallop out the last sixteenth to winabout as his rider pleased. Paul F. Ternes .received a substantial investment on his ,400 yearling purchase of last fall when his Ute Scoot Luke drove to a neck victory over a field of 11 other maiden two-year-olds in the third race at Continued on Page Forty-Five Bernmattar Never Headed In Churchill Downs Feature Continued from Page Nine 5 furlongs. The son of Piet literally cut in . the inside corner to register his initial victory 7 as he swung into the long front t straightaway at that point to engage the e leaders, Jet Hostess and Gailstar, and i emerge with a clear decision. The colt, cleverly handled by Clarence Meaux, raced the distance in 1:00%, and as a mild choice with the fans he returned .40. Meaux, by virtue of his win on Ute Scoot Luke, moved into the lead in the race for riding honors at the meeting breaking a tie with Steve Brooks.
