« ► Suffolk Turf Cap Seems Wide Open Prince Willy Likely Tepid Favorite in 7#610 Race; Greek Star, Camarista II. Go * By ELI CHIAT Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 8. — The 7,610 Suffolk Downs Turf Handicap, feature event on Saturdays 10-race program, drew a field of 13 grass . performers who will vie for a net prize of 1,446.50 if all answer the call to post. With only eight pounds separating the high weight from the low weight, this years edition of the about 1 1-16 miles test over the inner course appears to be one of the most wide open stakes of the session. Lou Sommers Camarista n. and John. and Pat Venutis Brookwood share the top weight of 115 pounds with Bayside Stables Erics Pet, the lowest weight carrier with 107 pounds. In between are Gerald Colellas Admirals Joy and Peter Fullers Goulash, 113 each; Sidney Bartons Greek Star and Pete Issaris Saratoga Pete, 112 apiece; Liz-Tree Stables Necromancer, Roxbury Farms OKeegan, W. C. MacMillen Jr.s Prince Willy, and Bill Resseguets War Signals, all in with 111 pounds; Hept Stables Dark Tale, 110 and Louis James Rittiners Marlow Road, 109. Second in Macomber Last Year Despite the fact that Prince Willy has failed to reach the winners circle in the past two years, the MacMillen colorbearer is rated as the overnight favorite to take down the top end of the purse. This five-year-old altered son of Princeauillo — Wanna Hygro has been lightly campaigned so far this year with only two starts in his record, both over the main track at Jamaica. During his 1958 campaign he competed against the top members of the countrys grass division, and turned in his best effort over this course in the John R. Macomber Handicap when he finished second to Hindu Festival. It is off this sparkling race that*he is expected to catch the fancy of the public. His rider is Conn McCreary. Greek Star is also seeking his initial victory of the year after making 10 starts. He showed a fine effort here last week when beaten a half length by War Signals in the Puritan Handicap over the main track. He has been tested twice this year over the Hialeah grass course, finishing far behind Tudor Era in one race and in another was beaten three and one-half lengths by Ambergris. Bill Skuse, who handled him in the Puritan, again has the mount. Camarista II. has displayed some of his best form when competing over the lawn, his only triumph of the year was recorded over the Gulfstream Park grass course in April when he led home a field of 2,000 claimers. Prior to that he was beaten a head by Deadly Actor over the same course. In his lone local start, he closed a good gap of ground in a 6 furlongs allowance race. Jockey Joe Spinale will handle the son of My Chum — Cameratta who was bred in Chile. Goulash was sent off favorite in the Puritan, and while closing a lot of ground during the late stages of the race, he was unable to threaten either War Signals or Greek Star. His major score this year was the Newport Handicap at Lincoln Downs. War Signals surprised the talent here last Saturday when, at 27-to-l, he roared by the leader in the stretch to edge -Greek Star. It was his fourth victory of the year, but the first time that he was able to handle stakes competition. Tomorrows race will be his first try over the grass, and he will be ridden by Earl Van Hook who is substituting for Henry Wajda who is grounded for 10 days by the stewards.
