— Governors Cap At Former Today Sir Bey and Open Range Renew Rivalry in Mile and 70 Yards Week-End Feature By DEAN WILLIAMS * Staff Correspondent FONNER PARK, Grand Island, Nebr., May. 8. — Ralph Perkins Sir Bey and Barney Applegarths Open Range will renew their rivalry here in Saturdays Governors Handicap at one mile and 70 yards. The pair will match strides with six others in the ,500 feature. Sir Bey drew top weight of 120 pounds, while Open Range will carry 113 pounds. Other weights for the feature are: Scomber, 113; Blenta, 110; Shadow Roll, 110; Folding Dough, 109; Luscious Fruit, 109, and Dark Wizard, 108. Sir Bey will pick up three pounds off of his victory in the Grand Island Elks Handicap two weeks ago. The son of Moose-k head came from just off of the pace to gain a half length victory over Open Range under the guidance of jockey Boyd Morris. Morris has been assigned the mount again Saturday. Open Range Carries 113 The homebred Open Range has been assigned the same 113 pounds he carried in the Elks Handicap when he -was defeated by Sir Bey. The weight shift in his favor could be an important factor in the Governors. He was also forced to race on the outside of Tela Fella in the Elks and that, too, must be taken into consideration. Scomber, owned by J. Lee Klesner, turned in a rather disappointing effort in his last effort by finishing sixth behind Sir Bey and Open Range. The Melvia Stubbs-trained gelding had an excellent record during the 1958 and can certainly improve over his effort in the Elks Cap. Blenta, who races for Dan Houghton, will be making her first appearance over a distance of ground at this meeting. The daughter of Talon won two races against lesser competition over the sprint distances but has yet to prove her worth over the distance she has been asked to negotiate Saturday. The co-featured seventh race attracted a crack field of sprinters to compete over f x/z furlongs. Those that will accept the issue under the allowance conditions are Spy Gem, Cinchie, Dr. Bunny, Bartholomew, Barn Dancer, Faultless Edna, Moodier, and Indian Sign.
