Piarulli and J. J. Brunettis Vertex, along with Helene S. Sadaccas A Dragon Killer and Walter M. Jeffords Piano Jim, had last minute "blowouts" for the Grey Lag Handicap this morning. Vertex, who will go to the post carrying topweight of 130, stepped a half mile over the Jamaica track in :49. A Dragon Killer, in with 112, had a brief speed test of- :36 for 3 furlongs, while Piano Jim dashed a half mile over the Belmont Park main strip in :48%. Mrs. Josephine Bay Pauls Idun, with jockey Dave Erb in the irons, completed a rhythmic 5 furlongs in :59%, handily, after posting fractions of :35 for the 3 furlongs and :47 for the half mile. Greentree Stables Eurasia continued to train briskly for his local debut as he sped 7 panels in 1:25%, handily. The speedy gray was impressive during his work, getting the first half in :47, and traveling past the three-quarter pole in 1:12%. Carlton Palmers, imported Tharp, who prefers to race on the turf, worked 4 furlongs in handsome style from the gate in :48%, while trainer Bill Hicks good colt, Pilot, covered his half mile assignment in :46%. The "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons duo of Brave Pilot and Bases Full displayed high speed working a half mile in :46% as a team.
