MURPHY Staff Correspondent SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 6. — Etelka, a seven-year-old stretch-running mare owned by Mrs. Vera Smith, of Lapeer, Mich., came from some distance off the pace to win the Amvets Purse, one of the features on todays bill at this track. Ably piloted by jockey Palmer Domenico, Etelka, making her third start of the session, came down the center of the track in the stretch to catch Grass Fire, from the Bishop Stable, near the end and win by one and one-quarter lengths under steady pressure. Grass Fire defeated Royals Last by one and one-quarter lengths for second place, while the favored Dr. Ole Nelson, one - time Hawthorne Gold Cup winner, was fourth. Fine Fiddle Makes Pace The Amvets was at seven furlongs, and the three horses eventually finishing in the money were rated in the early stages while Fine Fiddle was making the pace. After leaving the backstretch, Grass Fire moved to take over, and Royals Last also came forward, but Etelka, who had been going wide, came around the outside and was clearly the strongest at the end. Etelka paid 4.20 to win. The sunshiny weather drew a crowd of 11,542 to the course to view the nine-race program. The winning choices were Outlaw in the second, Double Barrel in the third and Acquiesce in the fourth, while Obstinate Si, victorious in the opener, was well backed. Obstinate Si was ridden by Skoronski, while apprentice Joe Valenti completed a 5.20 Daily Double in steering Outlaw. Jack Chestnut rode Double Barrel in the third, and that gray five-year-old took over when ready to lead Chinkapin by a good margin to the end. Acquiesce, an even-money choice, was steered by Harold Keene and galloped by the pacesetting Strict in the stretch to win as his jockey pleased.
