Giants Send Cubs Down To 7th Straight Loss, 8-5 NEW YORK, May 6.— UP— Knuckle-bailer Hoyt Wilhelm made the long walk from the bullpen for the twelfth time in 18 games this season and snuffed out a ninth-inning uprising that enabled the New York Giants to send the Chicago Cubs down to their seventh straight defeat, 8-5, today. Wilhelm, entering the game after Al Cor-win had walked pinch-hitter Bob Addis and Eddie Miksis to start the ninth, retired the next three batters in order. The stint preserved his record of no earned runs in 20 innings. The Giants clinched the victory in the fifth inning when they sent 10 men to the plate during a six-run assault on four Chicago pitchers. The Giants launched their six-run rally against lefty Paul Minner. Singles by Davey Williams and Al Dark and a walk to Bobby Thomson loaded the bases and knocked out Minner. Monte Irvin greeted reliever Bob Kelly with a two-run single, and, after Whitey Lockman had hit into a forceout that brought in another run, Daryl Spencer walloped a long double that brought in Fred Baczewski. Don Mueller, Sal Yvars and Corwin each hit a run-producing single to knock out Baczewski before rookie Tom Simpson induced Williams to hit into an inning-ending double play. The Giants made only one assist, by Maglie, to tie a Major league record held by three teams.
