The first man up for Chicago, Nellie Fox, doubled and came home on Minnie "Mino-sos single to start the White Sox rolling. Minoso scored on Sam Meles single and Pierce pitched drum-tight ball to hold them in front. Only two men reached second off Pierce until the seventh inning. Then pinch-hitter Del Wilber smacked a two-run homer into the left field stands, scoring Milt Boiling, on with a single. Jim Rivera smashed a two-run double in the third, scoring Minoso, on with a double, and Mele, on with a walk. Mele walked to force home Pierce in the seventh. Add Another Run The White Sox added another run in the eighth on Ferris Fains sacrifice, scoring Sherm Lollar, who reached first with a single. Pierce walked only one man and struck out five. It was his fourth win against one defeat. Red Sox manager Lou Boudrou got to the White Sox jinx when he substituted lefthander Bill Werle in the fourth. The Sox had lost seven of their nine defeats to southpaws and Werle held them to one hit in three innings until he was taken out for pinch-hitter Wilber.
