I., N. Y., May 6. — Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Tuscany outfinished Belair Studs Hyphasis and Harbor vale Stables favored Dark Peter in a four-horse photo finish at the end of the 0,550 Toboggan Handicap as Belmont Park opened its 37-day meeting this afternoon. Winding Way Farms Sagittarius forced his way into the picture at the end of the six furlongs on the Widener straight course. The camera showed Tuscany winning by a scant nose over the 1951 winner of the Toboggan, while Dark Peter, who won last years edition of the 60-year-old stake was a half length farther back and a neck before Sagittarius. Nick Shuk rode Tuscany, who paid 3.80 and was teletimed in 1:10 over the "good" track. Eddie Arcaro, however, was the riding star of the afternoon, winning the first four flat races before finishing fourth on Sagittarius. Tuscany earned 1,450 by his exertions, while his owner-breeder was presented a trophy by A. G. Potter, chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, who was the guest of Westchester Racing Association president George D. Widener. 21,910 Out in Hazy Weather A crowd of 21,910 turned out in mild, but hazy, weather to view the opening program, topping last years inaugural throng by some 1,200. The Toboggan lost some of its interest when Greentree Stables Tom Fool, who had top weight of 130 pounds and would have been the favorite, was scratched because of the wet track. In his absence, Dark Peter was made a solid choice and ran his race, but was not quite good enough. After the race, Nick Shuk said he led all the way in the Toboggan, though the deceptive angle of the straight course made it appear that Tea -Maker and Dark Peter were a step in front of him at the start and gave the impression that Hyphasis might have passed him for a few strides near the eighth pole. As the field came into clear view, Tuscany, Hyphasis and Dark Peter were heads apart, followed closely by Squared Away and Sagittaris, while Mr. Turf was not far away. Delegate, Earmarked and the aging Tea -Maker had already dropped back. It continued to be a bitter, head and head struggle between the leaders passing Continued on Page Forty-Three SAM E. WILSON, JR.— Owner of Royal Mustang, New Albany Handicap winner at Churchill Downs. Tuscany Takes Toboggan In Four-Horse Photo Noses Out Hyphasis as Belmont Meeting Opens; Arcaro Stars Continued from Page One the furlong pole, where Hyphasis appeared to take command for a few strides, while Tuscany came on again and, in turn, seemed about to draw clear, while Dark Peter and Sagittarius were still racing strongly at their flanks. In the final yards, Eric Guerin really got into Hyphasis and that gelding came on again with a final lunge that fell short by inches, while Dark Peter and Sagittarius tired slightly in the shadow of the wire. The veteran Delegate finished with his usual willing run to be fifth, followed by Squared Away, who stopped badly. Delegate may have been retarded when a left hind bandage came unstrung. Tuscany had been a model of consistency from his obscure debut until his race in the Camden Handicap last week, when he was unplaced for the first time in nearly three years. Arcaro rode his fourth winner in as many tries when he got Spring Hill Farms Jamie K. up to win the Elmont Purse in the final stride, taking the decision by a nose over King Ranchs Risque Rouge. It was another two and a half lengths back to C. Mahlon Klines Kaster, while Gustave Rings Atomic Fleet, who was coupled with Teds Jeep, was another length and a half out of the money. Jamie K. paid .40 as he scored his first victory of the year and stepped the mile and a sixteenth in l:44y5 on the sloppy, but drying, track. Jamie K. walked out of the gate, dropping many lengths back of the leaders, then had to go very wide to avoid the tiring Teds Jeep in the stretch, but turned in a fine race under 115 pounds, which meant that he was getting only two pounds actual weight from the older Risque Rouge. When Jamie K. dwelt at the start in the Wood Memorial last out, Conn McCreary rushed him up to the leaders in the first half mile, leaving him nothing for the finish. Arcaro allowed the son of Crowfoot, who is eligible to the Belmont Stakes and Preakness, plenty of time to settle into stride, then timed his move perfectly, but might have been beaten if Bennie Green hadnt looked back when passing the sixteenth pole with Risque Rouge. Though still sporting a beautiful black eye, Eddie Arcaro made a flashy return from Kentucky by winning both ends of the Daily Double. The veteran took the opener on T. P. Morgans Fighting Wise, who closed with a rush to score by a neck and came back to take the second race on Jack B. Wards Deluge, who also came from behind to score handily. The pair returned 6.40 in the Double. Arcaro made it three for three when he overcame the unfavorable No. 1 post position to win the fourth race on C. V. Whitneys Catspaw. The son of Mahmoud — Boojie was prominent all the way and took command inside the eighth pole in this four and a half furlongs on the Widener straight course to score by a half length over Harborvale Stables Ashenden, who led Christiana Stables Half Shell another half length. The second and third juveniles in this dash were part of the 13 -horse mutuel field. Twenty-seven youngsters went to the post. Catspaw paid .1fr and was timed in :52%.
