JOCKEY NICK SHUK— Rode 43 winners out of 149 mounts for a winning percentage of 29 at the recent Bowie-Laurel combined meeting. 4 Bowie-Laurel Combined Meet Saw Favorites Faring Well Ninety-Seven Choices Out off 248 Races Won; Handle of 0,505,839 for 31 Days The combined Bowie-Laurel 31-day meeting, which ran from March 27 through May 2, was highly successful. All racing was conducted at the Southern Maryland Agricultural Associations Bowie course due to the renovation and improvements now being made at Laurel. Most noteworthy of the 31 days was the exceedingly high percentage of winning favorites — 39, embracing 248 races. This means that 97 favorites in that number of races got down in front. Winning second choices were successful 46 times, while outsiders, or long-shots, scored on 105 occasions. Odds-on choices reached the charmed circle nine times against 13 defeats of those held at less than even money. There were no dead heats during the 31 days. Pari-mutuel handle for the 31 days hit 0,505,839 for a daily average of 84,059. A total of 368,359 fans made this possible, the daily average attendance being 11,882 despite some inclement weather. Bowie shared in the profits for 18 days of the combined session, while Laurel came in for its share from the other 13 days. During this period, the gross distribution of the two tracks reached 74,065, with a net of 52,000. for a daily net average distribution of 7,483.87. Royal Bay Gem Top Gleaner Eugene Constantins Royal Bay Gem, fourth in the Kentucky Derby last Saturday, wound up by topping the leading money-winning horse list on the strength of his victory in the Chesapeake Stakes on April 11. That triumph was worth 4,775, and represented his only start at the combined meeting. Another Royal — Royal Vale captured the Bowie Handicap two weeks later to earn 5,700 for his owner, Mrs. E. duPont Weii-, and finish as runner-up to Royal Bay Gem in the money department. Royal Vale last Saturday went on to win the 0,000 Gallant Fox Handicap at Jamaica. By virtue of Royal Bay Gems Chesapeake score. Constantin led the Bowie-Laurel money-winning owners on a total of 4,600. Brookfield Farm collected 9,130, of which Post Card gleaned 2,175 in the Laurel Handicap on April 18, to run second in money earned. Post Card also had a sec-and third for a grand total of 5,175 and third place behind Royal Bay Gem and Royal Vale. Nick Shuk rode away with jockey honors with 43 winners in 149 mounts for a neat percentage of .29. Glen Lasswell finished in the runner-up spot with 18 winning mounts in 99 tries, while an apprentice, W. Har-tack. was third with 16 triumphs in 88 chances. Lasswell and Hartack had identical percentages of .18. Sidney Jacobs was far and away the top trainer with 15 saddling successes. His nearest competitors, B. P. Bond and Claude Feltner, were six winners apiece off the pace.
