I Cockpit in Third Tally Of Ascot Park Meeting Leo Eichler Consistent Gray Has Two Lengths Margin on Mad Saint By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 6. — Leo Eichler s very consistent Cockpit, a gray son of Whirlaway, scored his third victory of the meeting when he came home two lengths in front of Mad Saint in one of the better races here this afternoon. Cockpit now joins Casimar, who won earlier in the afternoon, as the only triple winners of the current meeting. Cockpit was ridden by Willie Clark in his front-running jaunt and paid 0.40. Time for the six and a half furlongs was 1:23% over a heavy track. Cockpit was first out of the gate when starter Eddie Anthony squeezed the button and by the time the field had raced into the clubhouse turn was two lengths in front while in along the rail. Dotty N. was second at the time and Mad Saint in third place another length and a half back. As the horses straightened away for the run down the backstretch, Cockpit maintained that two-length margin and was going very easily while still saving ground. Mad Saint had now moved into second place and Dotty N. was third and tiring. Racing around the final turn and into the stretch, Cockpit came off the rail and Mad Saint moved up very fast with a bold rush and appeared as though the winner at the furlong marker. However, in the final sixteenth of a mile the challenger ran out of gas and Cockpit once again regained his two-length lead as he went under the wire. It was a perfect day for the sport although the sun failed to make an appearance. Temperatures were in the high sixties and a gentle breeze was blowing out of the West. A crowd of nearly 5,000 was in the stands. C. S. Milroys Kidalley became the first winning favorite of the afternoon when he gained the verdict in the fifth race with pockey Eddie Plesa in the irons. Kidalley went to the outside through the stretch to wear down both Irrawaddy and Start Miss. Kidalley by winning has now captured four out of his last five races. Irrawaddy opened a commanding lead in this event while on the backstretch with Start Miss in second position and the ultimate winner going along nicely in the third slot about two lengths off the pacesetter. On the turn, Plesa guided Kidalley to the extreme outside and while being fully extended through the final furlong was drawing clear at the end of the six and a half furlongs. His time was 1:24 and a .40 mutuel was hung out on the infield board.
