Chairman Murphy Urges Hollywood To Adopt Purse Formula Set by Board Says That Read, President Of HBPA, Guarantees Its Acceptance by Horsemen TANFORAN, San Bruno, Calif., May 6.— Dwight Murphy, chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, today "strongly urged" the directors of Hollywood Park to adopt the 4-3-2.7 formula stipulated by the board on April 20 for all meetings following the impending session at Hollywood. In a telegram to Mervyn LeRoy, president of the Hollywood Turf Club, Murphy said he had been "guaranteed" by Robert O. Read, president of the HBPA, that horsemen would race at Hollywood if the track adopted the boards formula. Murphys telegram to LeRoy follows: "I have been guaranteed by Robert O. Read, president of the National Association of HBPA, that the horsemen will race their horses at Hollywood Park if the formula for stakes and purses passed by the California Horse Racing Board on April 20, known as the 4-3-2.7 formula will be offered to the horsemen by Hollywood Park at its forthcoming meeting starting May 12. I am sure that the other members of the California Horse Racing Board agree with me that there has been too much adverse publicity recently regarding purse distribution and also believe that if the directors of Hollywood Park will agree to pay in stakes and purses an amount equal to the formula established by the California Horse Racing Board on April 20, thereby ending the controversy regarding purses, that the sport of racing in California will be helped tremendously."
