Five Sophomores fc Seek Garden City Powhatan, Brown Booter Clash; International Chase 5 Draws Oedipus, Eight Others 5 BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., » May 6. — The ,500 Garden City Purse, a fa test at a mile and a sixteenth for three- — year-olds, is the feature attraction at Bel- 5 mont Park tomorrow, while devotees of steeplechasing will be regaled with the q International, of the same value and at ya about two miles. Most of the five sophomores in the Gar- "* den City have been tried and found want- ZJ ing as major stakes prospects, but three of them are eligible to the classic Belmont ya Stakes and of those three, two may show Q considerable improvement at Belmont Park. The two are Greentree Stables Powhatan K * and Charfran Stables Brown Booter, both of whom give the impression of being ? "sand shy" and capable of profiting by tomorrows small field and Belmonts sweeping curves. Powhatan has not started since the — ■ Hialeah meeting last winter, during which uJ he scored two front-running victories, one UJ on the grass course and one on the main track. His last start was in the Flamingo, won by his more illustrious stablemate, Straight Face. Brown Booter turned in a dull race behind Milspal, who was badly beaten by Powhatan at Hialeah in his last outing, but has occasionally finished with a tremendous rush on the extreme outside and has trained brilliantly. Ted Atkinson will ride Powhatan tomorrow, while Bennie Green will be on Brown Booter. Modest Pete Tiring Third Two of the others in the Garden City finished in front of Brown Booter last out. Wood vale Farms Modest Pete, who is also eligible to the Belmont, was a tiring third in that mile and a sixteenth, a neck before Warbern Stables Sickles Sound. The latter is eligible to the Withers Mile and the Peter Pan Handicap. While Modest Pete wearied after setting the pace, as he often does, Sickles Sound closed with a belated rush, which is also a habit of his. Hedley Woodhouse will ride Modest Pete, while Jimmy Nichols will be on Sickles Sound. The Garden City field is completed by Mrs. E. B. Ryans Truxton, who won in medium-priced claiming company at New Orleans Fair Grounds, but was unable to score in allowance races. He won an allowance race at Bowie recently, however. The Some Chance gelding will attract some attention, having the services of Eddie Arcaro. The International Chase, which will be having its fifty-sixth running, has attracted nine of the best specialists of this precarious sport, headed by Mrs. Ogden Phipps perennial champion, Oedipus, with 162 pounds. The veteran will be ridden by the venerable Jim Smiley and will probably be favored in such wagering as there is. Two of tomorrows field finished in front of Oedipus in last years Grand National Steeplechase, their last appearance at Belmont Park. Montpeliers Sea Legs won that event, with Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs The Mast finishing second before Oedipus. Sea Legs gets in with 144 pounds, while The Mast carries 156. Sea Legs will be coupled with Rigan McKinneys Hot, 145. The quartet mentioned appear to be the class of the International, though Lawrence W. Jennings Navy Gun and Brook -meade Stables His Boots, who carry 145 and 147 pounds, respectively, have fenced brilliantly at times.
