Draws Out Quickly In Ottawa Purse Walmac Homebred Tallies With Arnold Kirkland Up Well Clear of King Phalan By J. J. MURPHY LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, HI., June 14.- Country Bumkin, a three-year-old fro -Walmac Farm, earned his second purse M three starts this year when he took tht featured Ottawa Purse before 7,088 patron! here this afternoon. The son of Shannon IL was second choice to Mr. Prosecutor and came from fifth place to accomplish his chore by three and one-half lengths over King Phalanx. The latter in turn got up in the final strides to wrest second place from Resplendent. Country Bumkin, ridden by Arnold Kirkland, paid .40. The distance was six furlongs and a field of seven competed. Mr. Prosecutor, a stakes winner as a two-year-old last season, was making his first start since last September, but had been showing good form in workouts, which probably accounted for his following. He was never seriously in the hunt, although racing third place for a time in the preliminary stages. Resplendent Shakes Off Jay Jay Gee Resplendent, with apprentice ONeil doing the riding, set the pace and shook off the Illinois-bred Jay Jay Gee, who also took an added-money event last year, in the first half-mile. Resplendent then took a lead of a couple of lengths, but Country Bumkin moved strongly between horses in the stretch to gain the head end a sixteenth out. King Phalanx finished fast. The weather was quite warm at the commencement of the program, but a light breeze was blowing. Then came a thun-dershower that prevailed during the running of the second race, but did little more than dampen the racing strip. Following -the rain the breeze died and climatic conditions became very humid. The afternoons racing got under way with a victory for Blue Roger, a three-year-old owned by Mrs. Charles Miller, wife of the Hawthorne track superintendent. Blue Roger was meeting 11 other maidens at one mile, and bested Burstin Bubble, the pacemaker, in the final drive, with John Heck-mann doing the riding. It marked the twentieth time -Blue Roger had been postward. Intelligent was favored in the second, race that engaged 10 maiden two-year-olds at five furlongs. Speedy Wave tried to go with her for a while, but then quickly dropped out of it and Blue Rhymer moved into the contenders spot. Cinda, who was bandaged on both of her front legs, maintained her lead all the way and Blue Rhymer could not make up "any ground. At the head of the stretch and all through the lane, Stout merely waved his whip alongside of the mares head and was content to hold his length advantage. Blue Rhymer tried desperately to get closer, but was unequal to the task. Cinda carried 118 pounds, making her co-topweight of the field, while Blue Rhymer was in at 113, with apprentice Roger LeBlanc. Grecian Queen, last years sophomore queen, was unable to show the form that made her a standout in 1953 and finished eighth in the field, never being in contention.
