I., N. Y., June 14. To the satisfaction of the majority in the - opening-day crowd of 22,095 at Aqueduct this afternoon, Alfred G. Vanderbilts favored Find wore down Saxon Stables Invigorator in the final sixteenth of the forty-ninth Queens County Handicap to triumph by three-quarters of a length. C. V. Whitneys Cold Command finished with a rush to be a similar margin away in third place, just a half-length before W. Haggin Perrys Domquil. Brookmeade Stables Capeador finished fifth after being in close quarters. A tepid choice in what shaped up as a wide-open handicap, Find paid .10 and negotiated the mile and a sixteenth in a moderate 1:44, with Eric Guerin riding hard through the long stretch. Sets Our to Steal Race Ted Atkinson set out to steal the Queens County on Invigorator, driving the Saxon Stable representative into a daylight lead on the outside rounding the clubhouse turn. Mandingo, who had been first away from the gate, turned into the backstretch a couple of lengths behind in second place, followed by Find and Count Cain. Another three lengths away, Flaunt and Press raced as a team. There was another gap back to Capeador, who moved up briskly nearing the far turn, but .soon found himself "surrounded" with no place to god. Cold Command was far back at this stage, while Domquil was in last place in the field of 12. Invigorator continued to lead around the turns and into the stretch, while Mandingo faltered at the head of the stretch and Guerin sent Find in pursuit of the leader. Approaching the eighth pole, it appeared that the favorite would run over Invigorator with ease, but the Brookfield colt held on gamely and Guerin also seemed more Continued on Page Forty-Eight , f ... Guerin sat down to ride coming to the sixteenth pole and I quickly took command, drawing away in the final strides. Cold Command moved up gradually on the outside, then finished with a belated rush, while Domquil closed even faster from even farther back. Capeador didnt get clear until after he had straightened away for the run home, then finished fairly well to be lapped on the leaders, while Flaunt hung after making a promising move on the final bend. The surprise of the race was Invigorator, who wore blinkers for the first time within memory and has apparently acquired unwonted early speed in the few weeks that he has been under the care of Eddie Neloy. Evening Out Asserts Superiority If there was any doubt about there being a potential champion among the eastern three-year-olds, George D. Wideners grand filly, Evening Out, dispelled it in the Regal Lily Purse. Returning to the races after having cut one of her hind legs kicking through a screened stall door, the Shut Out filly responded to Eddie Arcaros urging in the final phase of this- seven furlongs to triumph by a length over King Ranchs pacemaking On Your Own, who was more than three lengths in the van at the furlong pole, but couldnt hold the favorite. Mrs. John D. Hertz Happy Mood, winner of the Acorn Stakes, was another length away and three and one-half lengths before Mririan W. OConnors Busy Nellie. A solid choice to continue her record of never having been beaten by one of her own sex, Evening Out paid .10 after stepping the distance in a sparkling 1:23. The track record is 1:22, shared by Tom Pool and Northern Star. While On Your Own set a rapid pace under apprentice Dallas Harrier, Arcaro rated Evening Out in fourth place on the rail in the run down the backstretch, moved up a notch between the turns, then set out after the flying leader, who had an apparently insurmountable lead at the head of the long home lane. Arcaro roused Evening Out with his stick at the furlong pole and the brown filly responded at once, reaching out for ground with long, swift strides that carried her to On Your Own just inside the sixteenth pole. Arcaro was able to relax in the final strides, as Evening Out drew away with a brilliant burst of speed.
