Berg Sets Course Record In Womens Western Golf Wins Qualifying Medal With 70 In Open Tourney at Glen Flora Patty Berg, a veteran of womens golf, set a new course record for the Glen;Flora Country Club . at Waukegan, HI., Monday, with a, fiye under par 70 to win medal honors and a 00 prize in the twenty-fifth annual Womens Western Open Golf Championship. Miss Berg, four-time winner of the Western Open, edged out by one stroke, Beverly Hansen, the 1950 United States amateur champion from Indio, Calif. Miss Berg posted a two-under-par 36 on her first nine, going one .oyer oh the first hole when she missed the green, but picking up three strokes with accurate putting for birdies on the sixth, seventh and eighth. On" the last nine she knocked three strokes off for a 34 with putts of 20 and 36 feet for birdies, while getting another bird on the 410-yard seventeenth with two putts. The previous womens course record for the 6,425-yard course was a 71 registered in the mid-20s by Edith Cummings. Miss Hansen matched Miss Bergs 36 score on the first nine, but fell behind on the back nine with a 35 when she overshot two greens. Betsy Ralls, Spartanburg, S. C, shot a 38-35-73. Joyce Ziske, Waterford, Wis., fired a 37-36-73 for third honors, while defending champion Louise Suggs, Atlanta, Ga., and Betty MacKinnon, Dallas, Tex., each had 75.
