Regard Determine Aspirant for Horse Of Year Honors Off California Effort Gained Rather Than Lost i Prestige in Running Second To His Stablemate, Imbros HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., June 14. A. J. Crevolins Kentucky Derby winner, Determine, is still the nations "de-. fending three-year-old champion in the opinion of - most westerners and also a leading candidate for Horse of the Year honors as a result of the brilliant performance he turned in last Saturday in Hollywood Parks newest feature, the 00,-000 Californian. Determine didnt win in this, his first stand against older horses, but it took a worlds record effort from his older stablemate, Imbros, to beat him a length. Further, in shouldering 115 pounds, Determine was spotting Imbros himself one of the nations top-ranking handicap horses, nine pounds on the scale. Imbros, carrying 118 pounds, ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1:41 under the handling of Johnny Longden to tie the mark which Count Speed, also ridden by Longden, established at Golden Gate Fields in 1947. Determine, being handled by Ray York, had a good position from the start and on the second turn set sail for Imbros who had the lead from the break. Turning into the homestretch the "little gray Derby champion was within two lengths of his stablemate and he cut this disadvantage to one a furlong from the wire. From that point on both riders were lashing their mounts and they still were separated by a length as they charged under the wire. Determine not only lost no prestige in bowing to Imbros, but he gained a lot, for behind him came such older horses as King Ranchs High Scud, who was third, Abe Hirschbergs Berseem, Mrs. Ada L. Rices Pet Bully. Calumet Farms Fleet Bird, Mr. and Mrs. Harry James Laughin Louie, R. C. Ellsworths Fleet Khal and Mrs. Rea Warners Trusting. High Scud worked his way forward from last place in the field of nine to finish within almost two lengths of Determine, but the others were far back. Laughin Louie raced closest to Imbros pace until Determine, moved into second position, but then he was through. In finishing second Determine picked up 0,000 to increase his seasons earnings to 94,900. Imbros share of the purse was 3,300 and that sum lifted his years bankroll to 05,725. Determine, who this year has won eight stakes and finished second in three others, will accept one more major assignment here. That will be in the 0,000 Westerner, a contrast of a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds on July 3, and then will depart for Chicago. Present plans are for him to compete in the Arlington Classic and the American Derby in the Windy City and then if all goes well he will compete again against older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup in New York in the fall.
