Top Fair Shows Readiness For Engagement in Susan I Lane Homebred Takes Measure ! Of Beta Ray in ThistleDown Dash By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 14. Ernest H. -Lanes Top Fair, a homebred daughter of Top Deck Liberty Fair, scored by a length and a half over J. Howard Rouses Beta Ray in the featured Quick Purse here this afternoon. Samuel C. Dykes Lot-O-Bim was third, another two lengths back at the end of the five furlongs. Top Fair was strongly ridden by Bill Carstens and paid .40, being timed in an excellent :59 over the fast track. Top Fair ran as part of an entry with Miss Deck, winner of the Debutante Stakes while in New Orleans last season. The latter, after racing forwardly most of the trip, tired and wound up fifth. It was a hot, humid day here in the greater Cleveland area, but ah excellent crowd of 5,326 attended the races. Top Fair, by winning the feature, was the first choice to score thus far. Miss Deck showed the most speed away from the barrier and was followed by Queens Hope and Beta Ray. Lot-O-Bjm, Baileys Pride, Top Fair, Rio Riba and Deb Talk, Amnistiada and Fosters Cushla completed the field. Beta Ray, ridden by Donal Bowcut, moved tothe fore midway along the back-stretch with the ultimate victress second, a length back and another half length to the good of her stablemate. Lot-O-Bim was fourth. Beta Ray continued to show in front on the turns but the lead had been cut in half by Top Fair, who was ranging up on the outside. Miss Deck was still third and Lot-O-Bim was holding down fourth position with Deb Talk fifth. Passing the furlong marker, the position of, the top. two was unchanged with the pacesetter holding on gamely while along the rail. Lot-O-Bim. had moved in front of Miss Deck, however, and was now third while in the middle of the strip. Jockey Carstens, who has been riding in excellent form here, made his move on the filly just inside the furlong station and she responded gamely and moved to the fore without too much difficulty. Beta Ray was much the best of the others, however, and saved second money for her Lexington owner. Top Fair was making her first start of the meeting! She was winning for the third time this year in 10 trips to the post. She now has a two-race winning streak, having scored by three lengths in her last race at Churchill Downs while running for a ,500 tag. There was a claim of foul in the Quick. Leroy Cargile, who finished sixth aboard Rio Riba, claimed that Lot-O-Bim, who was third, had caused interference. The stewards, however, did not agree. J. V. Richards, Jr.s Gold Chest, three-year-old geldqd son of Alquest, broke his maiden here this afternoon in the third race when he arrived at the wire a length and a half to the good of the heavily backed Opozo. Doug Davis, Jr.s Traffic Miss was third, another neck in arrears at the end of the mile and one-sixteenth. The winner was ridden by Albert Widman and I paid 6.80. being timed in 1:48.
