Nelson, Middlecoff, Demaret, Furgol Entered in British Open ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, June 20 UP. Twenty-seven United States golfers, 14 of them amateurs, were listed today in the field for the British Open tournament to be played here July 4 8. The Americans included pros Ed Furgol, Cary Middlecoff , Byron Nelson and Jimmy Demaret, although it was not certain whether they all would compete. Other leading pros on the entry list published by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club were Johnny Bulla, trickshot artist Joe Ezar, George Fazio, Vic Ghezzi and Mort Dutra. In all, there were 300 golfers entered representing 14 nations. This was 49 less than the record entry of last year. Peter Thomson of Australia will be back to defend his championship. Leading U. S. amateurs in the field include George Coleman of Miami, Okla.; Jimmy McHale, Wynnewood, Pa.; Ed Low-ery and Cpl. Ken Venturi, San Francisco; Clarke Hardwicke, Los Angeles; Jack Mun-ger, Dallas; Robert J. Sweeney, New York, and Ray Graham, of Glen Head, N. Y. Other American entries: William Wick-liffe arid Harreld N. Kirkpatrick, both of Greenville, Ky.; O. F. Woodward, Grosse Point, Mich.; Joseph A. Brooke, North Hills, Pa.; T. J. Isaacs, Langley Air Force Base; Alvin Cook, Steubenville. Ohio; John Davis, R. D. Lutz, Mike Krak and Neil Russell.
