Dozen Sprinters Meet at Detroit VanBerg and Wright Battle For Training Honors; Each Has Pair Going in Feature By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RAC.E COURSE, - Livonia, Mich., June .20. The Northwest Sportsmen Purse, a six-furlong claiming event for three-year-olds and older, is the best offering on a mediocre program scheduled for Tuesday at this Motor City racing grounds. The top attraction lured an overnight field of a dozen useful sprinters, representing nine interests. Marion H. VanBerg, colorful Nebraska turfman, and Vester R. Wright, Volunteer State horseman, presently in a close battle for leading training honors, will saddle entries for the dash. Beginning the Monday racing, Wright had sent out 16 successful charges while VanBergs silka were in the winners ring on 14 occasions during the current Michigan Racing Association season. Wright tightens the girths oh T. Alie Grissoms Rico -Vino and Big Heart while VanBergs Northwest Sportsmens Purse hopefuls-are Solicit and Chic Wave. Jockey Lois Cook, top reinsman at the meeting, will have the mount on one of the VanBerg starters while young Larry Gilligan, who hustled 12 starters home in his first week of action here, is to guide either Rico Vino or Big Heart. Zakoor Also Saddling Entry Trainer William Zakoor, a close fourth in the training standings, also will have a pair of starters in the Tuesday headliner; Mrs. Zakoors Holly Bough and Helen Ra-covitis Tarom. Ypung Albert Blache will be in the irons on Tarom, but no rider had been named late today for Holly Bough. Others expected to start are Mrs. J. For-ans Magic Choice, W. F. Salisburys Dark Theatre, Mrs. Thomas G. Mays Willy Nilly, and Circle K. Farms George Ardan, a fair class winner at the meeting. Also O. C. Kroneman and Sons Smooth Palm and Mrs. Richard A. Connells Rock Dozer, who has a perfect record of "two for two" at the Detroit Race Course this season. William Holborn is engaged for Magic Choice, Charles Clark rides Dark Theatre, Evan Jenkins will be astride George Ardan, and Tommy Barrow is to handle Rock Dozer. Young Willie Zakoor rides Smooth Palm in the Northwest Sportsmens Purse. One of the better supporting numbers on the Tuesday card is the five furlongs fifth which will bring out nine quick juveniles. The Louisville-owned Paddock Stables Babcha and Fraluxe appear to have an edge over R. H. Mullen, Jr.s Kentuckian and Missy Ann. Chief Joe, the improved Ressa Bob, Winged Devil, Le Chall and i Robert Gabe complete the probable starting band. Apprentice Gilligan is to guide either . Babcha or Fraluxe, while jockey Cook will be up on one of the Mullen Stable youngsters. ! Dick Miguez rides Chief Joe, the veteran Carroll Bierman will be astride Winged J Devil, and Jimmy Breckons is named on i Le Chall. Bobby Bright, who has been i showing good saddle form, drew the saddle chore on Ressa Bob. i .
