Orioles Sign Bonus Baby7 From Texas for 0,000 BALTIMORE, Md., June 20 UP. Robert Sydney Nelson, an 18-year-old Dallas, Texas, youth described by manager Paul Richards as "the greatest thing since the invention of the round wheel," was signed today by the Baltimore Orioles for a bonus estimated at 0,000. Nelson, a pitcher-first baseman, was the fifth bonus player signed this season by the Orioles, who have indicated they are willing to shell out liberally for standout young prospects. "Of all the bonus players we signed this season, Nelson is the one we wanted most," said Richards, who combines the tasks of field manager and general manager. "Every club in the majors was interested in him, but we made up our minds to get him and we did." To make room for Nelson and Tom Gas-tall, a Boston University baseball and football star signed Sunday, the Orioles placed Billy Cox on the disqualified list and put first baseman Eddie Waitkus on the 30-day disabled list. Cox was still charged to the Baltimore roster, even though he was traded last week to the Cleveland Indians. He has refused to report to Cleveland and says he has quit baseball for good. Waitkus is suffering from a severely wrenched back.
