Porterhouse Overtakes Berseem in Drive to Win Prevails by Almost Two Lengths; Shoemaker Astride Five Winners HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., June 20. Coming from back of the fastest early fractions of the meeting, Llangollden Farms Porterhouse caugh the front-running Berseem in the stretch and pulled away to win the 8,300 Lakes and Flowers Handicap here Saturday. It appeared that Berseem and jockey Bill Shoemaker had things all their own at the turn for home but Abraham Hirsch-bergs speedster faltered under his top impost of 126 pounds and Johnny Longden drove Porterhouse by him without any difficulty to win by a length and three-quarters in 1:21. Berseem nearly lost it all as Alidon and Karim, two stout stretch runners, closed gamely to take third and fourth with only noses separating the threesome. Shoemaker broke Berseem on top and despite the impost he went to the quarter in :21 and then hit the half-mile in :44. At the five-eighths the timed showed an amazing :55 but the swift fractions began to take their toll as Porterhouse slipped by to win handily. Second choice of the crowd of 42,475, Porterhouse returned .80, .90 and .90. Although he failed to win the big one, Shoemaker, returning to action after a five-day suspension, dominated the rest of the program. He clicked with five winners, first riding quintuple of the season meeting, and bosted his win total to 40 at the half-way mark of the 53-day meet. Shoemakers victories came aboard Dennis ODoon, First Down, Jeans Joe Duece Admiral and Fanfare.
