The five-year-old gelding Scent, winner of the LaSalle and Domino Handicaps at the Balmoral meeting, will attempt to make it a triple in top company when he goes to the post aS the highweight and likely favorite in the 5,000 added Myrtlewood Handicap here Wednesday. The chestnut son of Jamestown will carry 124 pounds and meet seven rivals at the six-furlong distance. He will be ridden by Steve Brooks, who led the Balmoral jockeys but only managed two winners here an the first seven days of racing. Scent will carry the colors of Monaghan Farms of Denver and will break from inside post position. The Myrtlewood, which will be contested for the fifteenth time Wednesday, will have a gross value of 6,850 if all eight seek the honors and the net value to the winner will be ,925. The scantiness of the field makes it the least profitable of all Myrtlewoods since 1943. Won La Salle, Citation at Balmoral Scent, who came east under the supervision of trainer Hurst Philpot after having won a couple of grass races at Santa Anita during the winter, started off on the right foot in taking the opening day LaSalle at Balmoral. He wound up as the fifth leading money-winning horse at Balmoral, accounting for- 1,375 in earnings. J. W. Rodgers Due De Fer is seeking a xepeat triumph in the Myrtlewood. Last year, as a three-year-old, the son of Spy Song defeated Spur On, a six-year-old, at equal weights. In his first appearance in the Chicago area this year, Due DeFer lailed as one of the favorites in the Domino,, finishing eighth. Prior to that he was fourth in the Oceanport Handicap at Monmouth Park. His lone win this season came in an overnight handicap at Jamaica. Last year Due De Fer packed away 2,350 in earnings, accounting for several stakes and winning eight of his eighteen starts. He will have a rider change from the Domino, as Dave Gorman will replace Donald Brumfield in the saddle. Mrs. H. J. Damms fine mare, Arab Actress, only one of her sex in the Myrtle-wood field, proved her fitness in winning at five and one-half furlongs on the grass opening week here. It was her first outing on the greensward and she came very fast down the inside to win going away. That was her first start in almost one year. She was the outstanding filly of the Midwest two years ago, taking both the Cleopatra and Misty Isle Handicaps. Dave Erb, with two stakes victories to his credit at this meeting, will be in the saddle. Van Crosby, co-holder with Clang, Myrtlewoods greatest rival, of the seven-furlong track record at this course, will be making his second start since early February. In his initial outing here the Dun-treath Farm runner finished second to Smackover on the grass after having led to the stretch. In 1953, Van Crosby won the Warren Wright Memorial to equal the seven-eighths record, that still stands. Jockey Willie Hartack,- who was to have departed for Delaware Park, will remain over to ride Van Crosby. Happy Go Lucky Returning to Action An old favorite returning to action in the Myrtlewood is the unlucky Happy Go Lucky. This" six-year-old son of Haltal has been plagued with injuries throughouthis career. He is owned by Harold Bockman, and last season finished third in - the Myrtlewood. He has not been in action for almost a year, but has been working very well for his comeback and will be- ridden by Al Popara. Hasty House Farm will be represented in the Myrtlewood by Torch of War, Walmac Farm by Vagabond King, and No Return, owned by T. Q. Preece, round out the field. Torch of War is tackling Scent for the third time in the past few weeks. He was sixth in the LaSalle and fifth in the Domino, both won by the Monaghan racer. His most important score this season was in the Churchill Downs Handicap. Vagabond King, winner of two handicaps at Hawthorne last autumn, started in three stakes at the Balmoral session and was unplaced in each. He was third back of Torch of War in the Churchill Downs Handicap. No Return is the extreme outsider in the Myrtlewood. He ran two fair races at Balmoral, being third to Ruhe and second to Montenegrin. He will be making his fifth start of the year. The secondary feature Wednesday will be the Spy Song, an optional claiming race at seven furlongs. Big Stretch, who was second to Battlefield in the 1950 Belmont Futurity and who was a fast-going second here last out, will be among the starters.
