, . By Zeus Wins Turf Event at Arlington Mrs. E. Laskers Homebred Ridden Out by Heckmann to Lead In Cloyer Past Wire By HUGH J. McGUIRE ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 28. Mrs. Edward Laskers By Zeus, cleverly handled by jockey Johnny Heckmann, turned back six opponents to take top honors in the featured Arden Shore Purse, an allowance affair at one mile and a sixteenth over the turf course here today-. Ridden out at the end, the winning son of Count Fleet Athene, who was bred by Mi and Mrs. Lasker, was a length and a "half before Mrs. John L. Oglesbys fast-finishing In Clover as Oriental Spring, from the Hasty House Farm, was third on the inside, a half-length away and before his stablemate, Ruhe, by a head. The winner, an invader from California, who was third in his previous outing here, earned 111 pounds and covered the distance in the excellent time of 1:43, which is only two-fifths of a second slower than The Eagles track record and was the fastest time recorded at the distance over the grass this season in the Chicago area. On the strength of his recent third here, By Zeus was installed a stout choice by the 13,020" patrons vho were in attendance. Calumet Farms Scotsmans Bond was withdrawn from the race after he had run off while training during the morning. Displays Most Early Speed By Zeus had the most early speed of the field from the gate, but he was quickly joined in the van position by Mr. Paradise. The pair raced as a team in the lead, with the eventual winner on the inside around the first turn, but when clear on the back-stretch, Heckmann refused to b edrawn in-toL a pacemaking duel with Mr. Paradise and eased By Zeus back into second place. Rated there down the back lane and around the far turn, By Zeus was not asked for speed until straightening into the home " lane. Responding splendidly, he moved around Mr. Paradise without undue effort to assume command and draw clear. Mr. Paradise was done when headed and faltered back into the discard and Ruhe and Oriental Spring, neither of whom had been far away, were asked for their best and closed with good but unavailing courage. In Clover had been well back of the pace most of the way but when set down for the final drive moved around the outside with good speed and set sail for the leader. This bid found him supplanting the other rivals, but Heckmann kept By Zeus to his task to make the issue r-afe. Platan, winner of the Rushaway, the secondary feature and fifth race on the bill, 1 turned in a smashing effort to be up in " time to beat Devilment. The Hasty House . Farm runner was in last place to the j stretch turn, but came with a rush onj end and was up in time to win by a head with jockey Johnny Adams hustling him with all his might. Devilment, who took command over the favored Montenegrin in j the stretch, was several lengths in advance of the latter at the end. The distance was one mile and Platan paid .60. William Hal Bishops willing two-year-old, Skeptical Kid, disposed of a fair band of juveniles in the fourth race. Jovial June, a recent winner here, was a short-priced favorite and kept company with the Bishop runner for about four and one-half fur-Continued on Page TwentyNine i i ! Short-priced horses accounted for the first two races and the Daily Double paid 4.80. Shano, after many attempts, graduated in the opener, which was for maiden two-year-olds, with Royal Product, the public choice, being third. Eight-year-oM Yellmantown won the second as the favorite from the outsider, Flying Pat. The third race was for maiden three-year-old fillies and Hedgewood Miss, who drew the bulk of the public support, was the winner. She came from behind under the guidance of John Heckmann to dispose of the pacemakers. Penny Fortune and Rlue Again, who finished second and third, respectively.
